Code 173 on 5.8L

Just got my 96 f350 auto. back from the shop, ended up $500 poorer and no better off. Took truck in for a code reading and to see what they could do about the motor surging after it warmed up. They told me about the 173 code and suggested cleaning the fuel system and replacing the fuel pressure reg.(they tested the fuel pressure and said it was weak).

I paid my money and five minutes of driving same problem, check engine light and surging while driving.

Any suggestions on what to check next?

I have already replaced the fuel filtre, given it a good tune up, and the plug wires aren't that old, and appear to be ok.

The mechanic says his next guess is to replace the fuel pump. I think he is headed in the wrong direction, but perhaps the screens in the pumps could be plugged( if there are screens)?

Yes there are screens o the end of the puel pump...It is a good possibility it is cloged up....You could try to clean it and put it back in and retest the pressure...
But if I were you after going thru all of the trouble I would just replace the fuel pump...

I would also change the plugs and wires ...just because they dont look old doesnt meen there are any good...

You been had...
The fuel pressure regulator can do nothing to improve a poor fuel pressure, all it can do is dump excess pressure back to the tank.

Do you have a fiend or someone with the same truck you could borrow their computer?

Thanks for the input guys.

I think i finally fixed the problem. On the advice of several other threads on the site I replaced the O2 sensor and the problem has gone away.

I am not exactly sure what was to blame but while working on the truck I found a crack in the manifold and the entire system from the throttle body to exhaust just covered with black.

Since replacing the O2 sensor it runs great and my fuel mileage has doubled, thanks again for your input.
