On my way home from work the CEL came on for about 10 minutes then went off while driving. When I got home I immediately got out my scanner and got a new code i have not got before.
173 -- HEGO (ho2o) sensor fault (rich) from the scanner manual.
It was bucking like mad all the way home.
Before I left work while idling i was pumping the brakes and could hear the engine rpms increase slightly then drop back down.
From what I have been reading 173 this could be many things.
Questions:
Should I change out the brake booster ASAP? could the bad booster cause this code due to the vacuum leak I probably have?
Should I pull off the FPR vacuum and see if gas is present?
Or possibly crank while its disconnected to see if gas shoot out?
Should I replace the O2 sensor? (From what I have read, the O2 sensor may be good its just sensing a rich condition)
What is strange is that the code I got before, 311 for thermactor system fault (smog pump system) did not show up, I did clear them last week.
Yes code 173 could be caused by a lot of things but the brake booster isn't one of them, the bucking suggests a possible fuel delivery problem so check fuel pressure.
One more issue popped up this morning. I was stopped at a light and when I hit the gas
the van stumbled a bit and would not move for about 4 seconds then it moved (Has not
done this before) the OD light dimmed and started to flicker randomly, like a short. It
stayed like that for about 5 minutes then went back to normal operation. I just put a
new OD switch in and the
wires are not shorting out on the shift lever or anywhere, Checked that about a month
ago.
On my way home OD light, switch, and trans worked and ran fine. Othe than the
bucking. I dont think thats the trans though.
Checked codes again getting 628, Excessive converter clutch slippage.
I was getting that code before but I feel no slippage at all while driving.(except for todays event)
I can cruise at 55 and then hit the gas and the van takes off with no problem.
I can cruise at 70 mph and I dont feel anything slipping or odd going on.

I checked the regulator and I have no fuel coming out and dont even smell any.
I plan on picking up a fuel pressure gauge next week and checking the pressure.
The pump, regulator, injectors, are all original on 220,000 miles.
Air filter is really clean, but the crankcase ventilation filter was caked with oil, I replaced it.
