I have a 91 F150. The ignition has been rebuilt somewhat several years ago by a couple of questionable "mechanics". When they got through the ignition would no longer allow me to turn off the engine unless in park. I drove it anyway.
Now its shutting off every few seconds. I realized the power from the ignition switch is being cut as if you were rotating the key backwards toward the off position. I tested this and it seems to be true. When running, if I apply slight pressure to the key as if to start the engine again, but not far enough to actually engage the starter it stays running. If I release the pressure.... it goes dead.
I removed the steering wheel.... don't know why. I always wanted to so its on the seat. LOL
Anyway I ended up removing the ignition from the "sleeve". I put a screwdriver into the slot deep within the column. I apply just the slightest pressure and the electrics come to life. Radio, volts, ect.. I tap it after I remove the screwdriver it loses contact.
What is worn out....?
The guys that rebuilt it and couldn't get it to work properly ie (shut off unless in park) told me the accuator rods were not in good shape and to make it any better they would have to replace them. I just drove it and the ignition has worked fine until recently. Progressively worse til I can't even get it into gear before it loses contact and cuts off. GRRRR.
Dear Evenflo76, your ignition switch has failed. Remove it and check for loose play at either end which will cause the intermittent failure of the contacts. When the actuator rod starts the engine the contact doesn't stay put due to the worn switch. Many of these are replaced every year. Auto parts store stock them routinely. About $11.
Yep, you were correct. The ignition switch is slightly spread apart at one end causing the intermittent contact.... $10.99 at Vehicle Area and in stock. Thanks.
