Trailer Towing

Recently I just purchased a new legend trailer. When I bought the trailer they connected the 7 pin plug that came with my truck. Btw my truck is a 2005 f150 lariat. I also had electric brakes put in at the dealership when i bought it. But my question is, when they connected it, the turned the light switch on inside the trailer and nothing. The person who sold the trailer to me then asked me to open the hood so he can find a fuse. He said that the truck has a constant wire already there, but u just need to put the fuse in. If someone could give me some input I would well appreciate it.

Overall I am trying to get a constant power source to my trailer so I can use the lights. The outside trailer lights, electric brakes, all that works fine. Thanks much and hope u can understand my spiel.

thanks again
Mark

the constant wire is factory hooked up but only is powered with the engine running. also the trailer must have its own battery the hot wire in the 7 pin is to charge the batttery and can not supply the entire trailer .

Now I getcha. So it's just as easy and putting the relay in that came with the truck into the proper spot. Thanks much. I was a little confused as to how that worked. You cleared it up.

thanks

I am not familiar with Legend trailer, is it an RV or more like an enclosed trailer? At any rate the best thing is to put a battery on the trailer and have it charge from the truck. Fords later model trucks are all relay for the battery charge line. If you don't want to add a battery and it is an enclosed trailer. You can take the relay out and make a jumper wire that would have a constant 12V at the rear. The only problem with that is that you'd be limited on the current draw, so lights and maybe a small fan would be all that you'd realistically be able to run. The line has a 30A fuse but I think maybe 15A is all that the wiring would actually support. Another thing, if you went this route you need to be very cautious not to drain the battery so much that you cannot start the truck. This is why I recommend putting a small deep cell on the trailer, then if it runs it down, you can still start the truck and charge it back up.
