Question What would You do?

Im new to the site. I need some input on what to do about the rear leaf's. I jus bought my 03 F250 and took it out with my trailer to see how it handled it. and seeing from the picture its sagging bad. What do u suggest i do to level the rear end out while towing, and where should i get it? thanks a ton...RJ

PS. My trailer is totally empty in these pics lol

My suggestion it to go to a spring shop and add one leaf to each side it rear (or if you can do it yourself have leaves cut and drilled and add them yourself) as that will give you a good perminent "fix" for your problem and cheaper and "better" than adding Tibrems too. Some may tell you to use a equalizing hitch but you should not have to with your rig and trailer.

Go to my Gallery and se the size of trailer I pulled with an 03 X...before I got my F350...the way I did it was with an equalizer hitch, the pic of it is in my gallery also...my X was level and trailer level...

Hello Rollin03F250, Welcome to FTE None better on earth.

I suspect it is an illusion. With the truck unhooked from the trailer and drive it like around the block to get some travel in the springs. While on pavement measure the distance from the bottom of the bumper to the ground. Connect the trailer, drive it a little and come back the the same spot and measure it again from the same place on the bumper.

It is hard for me to believe that an empty trailer would make more than 2" difference in the measurement of a hansome F250 like that. If it does, something is wrong with the setup somewhere. IMHO

jowilker is right - if that truck drops more than 1-2 inches with the trailer empty, either the trailer tongue is made of lead, or there are no springs in the truck...... So what did this truck do in it's previous life - did the original owner overload it all the time? I drop a 7000+ lb tt on my F250 and the rear doesn't sag more than a couple inches (mabe 3 at the most) - until the equalizers bring it back. If you're dropping 2 inches without equalizers and an empty trailer, take a serious look at the suspension.

I'm with you alchymist. I pull an 8000# tt and my 250 is sitting pretty. My question would be, why would you tow heavy without an equalizer or weight distribution hitch? Can't be good for the truck. Ray

Looking at your trailer it looks just like my 16 ft Haulmark trailer. If it is its a well build heavy trailer, empty if I remember right about 3200 lbs. So you will have right around 320 lbs of tongue weight with a empty trailer, and that will make any F250 go down in the back. I never have weighed mine but it is heavy on the tongue but with a 2 1/16 in ball its made to take a load.

Isn't that a 2 5/16" ball?

320 lbs shouldn't make an F250 squat. I weigh close to 200 lbs, and when I jump into the bed of mine it barely moves. The tongue weight on our tt is somewhere between 800- 900 lbs, and the F250 will only squat about 2-3 inches, the load equalizers then pull it back level.

I just went to his gallery and the trailer is not empty, its got cabinets built in the front plus more just go take a look. His truck also looks like it may have a lift or a leveling kit on it. If its a leveling kit the truck will look like its sagging in the back with a load.

Nice trailer

as far as i know the truck does not have a lift kit on it and the cabinets are only made of plywood and some 2x4's nothing extreme..its got a few gas cans up there and thats about it. and for the truck its only got 2 leafs and a shock for each side up front and 5 or so in the back plus the shocks. was thinking about upgrading to a heavier duty leafs becuase i just added a plow this week, i wanna get more than just 2 leafs under the front on each side.....open for anything thanks...RJ

If you don't have the Ford overlaod springs on the rear axles, that would explain why the rear end is going down so far. I would just add a set of air bags to bring it back up. Not all F250 trucks have them but all F350 do.

I just bet you didn't buy the trailer to pull it around empty? put your normal load in it and see what your tongue weight is. What is the gvw of your truck alot of the newer trucks have dual rate springs the initial couple of inches is soft for a decent ride empty then they stiffen up once thats used up to carry a load but air bags might be the way to go. I found a web site with what I thought were a decent priced bag by typing "air bag suspension" on google whole kit for less than 3 bills

Maybe it is just me, but I don't think that it is squatting much at all, if you want it to stay level with the trailer then air bags are the way to go, I love mine. Also, from the picture I would say that you have some type of a leveling kit up front, just too much space between the tire and well.
