yesterday, i went to fix what i thought was an exhaust leak on my 1990 351w and found it wasn't that. there is a really loud ticking noise coming from the passenger side of the engine. any ideas? i sounds like a valvetrain tap. it sounds like its coming more from the head than the oil pan....
Take off your valve cover on the passenger side head and make sure that all of your rocker arms are torqued to spec, not to loose or to tight to get the sequence right you need to have the harmonic balance a the TDC mark. Pick up a haynes or chilton's manual and it will give you the sequence, while you're at it do the drivers side at the same time to ensure uniformity. If you have trouble rotating the engine to the TDC mark remove you're spark plugs, because this will allow for easier rotation and you won't strip out the back of the crank when you rotate the engine with a torque wrench. If you don't have a torque wrench availible try keying the ignition a little at a time (with the plugs in of course) and then try rotating the harmonic balance until you're at the TDC mark.
how do you know your oil pressure is fine? if you are going by the stock guage it is a switch that will read normal at 6 psi. So if you are going off of that, then you cant say your oil pressure is fine. Put a mechanical guage on there and then tell us.
You will not have to gap them on your application. On the older style small blocks with the ajustable valve train you would. On your truck all you have to do is torque them to specs.
