As I was driving home from vacation the other day while towing my boat I started noticing a tapping sound coming from the passenger side. Sounds like an exhaust leak or a lifter. Can't tell. Sounds louder under acceleration. It's a 2009 5.4 with 70k. Just had ford do oil change last week. Oil level is good. Anyone else have similar issues?
My work truck had a 5.4 that started doing that then within a couple of hundred miles it dropped a cylinder. Towed it to a shop and found that it lost a cam lobe. But I agree that a stethoscope would be a good first step in pin pointing the noise.

Thanks for the replies. I have a extended warranty so I dropped it off tonight to let them figure it out. I think it's an exhaust leak myself
Turns out that it's a broken spark plug. That's what they think at the Honda dealer where I bought it and had to take it because of warranty. Then they told me to take it to ford. I'll wait and see what ford says. Funny how a plug would break? Anyone ever have that happen?
Had an 08 5.4 did the same thing. Took it to ford found out it had a cracked exhaust manifold on passenger side. said it was pretty common on the 5.4's once they got up in mileage. go figure, that being said I don't know anyone else that had this problem besides me.
Got the truck over to ford and no broken plug. Exhaust manifold leak. Funny how Honda had three techs look at it and say it had a broken spark plug. Lesson learned. Don't buy a ford from a Honda dealer or vice versa
How much do these exhaust manifolds cost with the dealer doing it ?One side that is.
I just had the passenger side exhaust manifold on our 2010 5.4L replaced at my local shop last week. It was 7 hours of labor because of lack of easy access and having to remove broken studs before putting the new one on.
The manifold kit from Ford was $240 so total was over $1000 for the job.
Also, a cracked manifold isn't considered a safety issue so a recall would never be issued.
