Starting to suspect the starter is dying as well. So much so I'm going to replace it and see what happens. I still suspect the harness plug on the back of the ignitioin switch because it "seems" that if I "masssage" it I can get the starter to work.
However, this morning it wouldn't cooperate so I took a piece of #12 copper and ran a straight ground connector from the negative battery terminal to one of the starter housing bolts. Did not fix the problem.
I'll let y['all know how the new starter works. Hope I can find the receipt for this one because it's only been on the truck for a few months and this isn't my primary vehicle.
I'll throw this out there, pull the starter out and use jumper cables directly to the starter to see if it will spin correctly. With all things considered, it would atleast rule out the starter (so long as you have a good connection on the battery), otherwise, I'm guessing the ground is faulty, but if you bypassed it, it should have worked. Good luck, I hate starter problems!
Well I replaced the starter. It's working fine now. I'm still not convinced there isn't something else going on here but I can live with the results I guess.
So right now it appears the remanufactured starter from Advance Auto wore out in about three months of very limited service. I've replaced it with another of the same since it was free. If this one fails the next one will be a NOS no matter what it costs. :-)
My guess is, It was the "Remanufactured" part of the starter that failed, not that "Advance Auto" part. That's what ya get when ya buy remaned parts, a chance that they will fail. Ya get that with new as well, but just a lot lower percentage. Yes I am defending Advance a bit since I work there part-time. Part-time = decent discount... Im there half the time anyway, might as well get payed...
TWO WORDS, STARTER DRIVE. I have to replace my starter for the same reason somtimes it engages sometimes not. You use to beable to replacce the drive but in our new and improved days the rebuilt starter is the same price. This is real common on Fords, Heck in the 60s that was the weak link along with the soloid.
