initial timing setting
Give yourself some advance by rotating the distributor after installation. Always try and get that distributor in pertect or "dead on". It will only let you install it in the increments of the distributor gear. That's about 45 degrees. Do I understand your question correctly? I've assembled a half dozen 302s and as many 289s, I think I understand what you need.
If not, always in stall your cam at 0 degrees advance or retard with respect to the crank. If your advancing or retarding your cam it should be to get it back to the spec on your cam card which is 0 degrees. I've advanced and retarded cams to taylor powerbands and it has always resulted in an over all loss of HP.
