I have a 1982 F-100 w/only 80,004 original miles on it. I am having problem after problem with my 5.0 L 302. If it isn't another vacuum leak, it's the P.O.S. Holly carb. I put on it. Also, it keeps running really hot. I've changed the thermostat and had my radiator refurbished. Fan clutch and hoses are good, what else could it be? To top it all off, I am leaking oil EVERYWHERE! The truck sat on my grandfather's ranch for almost 4 years without being started before I got it. Anyway, it's overall a good truck, but I really want to get the best performance out of it. Any ideas on any of these complications? Thanks.
That old of a vehicle, especially after it sat without running for 4 yrs is bound to need a bit of work. If radiator, t-stat, adn water pump are good it it is still runnning hot, may have ablown head gasket. Vacuum hoses with age gan get brittle and crack. Seals and gaskets that sat for 4yrs with can also dry out and need replacement.
i would pull the motor and go thru and replace every gasket possible. check for cylinder wear and worn crank/rod bearings. if everything seems tight then put back together and start it up. i would suggest getting a new carb as well. try to locate a 3 row radiator and put a 180* tstat in.
Thanks for the insight Kemicalburns and charliehorse. I traded my other truck in on an SUV for the woman. This 82 F100 is my primary vehicle now. I'm not a very advanced mechanic and do not have the time to pull the engine myself and replace everything. I might come out just as well dropping a new engine in it. If I do decide to buy a new one, do any of you know of a reputable place to order one? Anyway, that was just a thought.
We were faced with a similar dilemma with our F100. THe engein had leaking valve seals, low compression, burning oil. Found a newer 302 at a junk yard that was still in the car , so we were able to start it listen to it and check it out. Car had 60k on it. The junkyard dog cost us $400.....a *lot* cheaper than a complete rebuild on the old motor. It was going to cost us that much alone just to take the heads in and have them rebuilt!!! Swapping one 302 out for another is a pretty sim-le straighfoward task....for teh most part
Sorry for the delay, I've been working out of town. I am relocating to another city in a few weeks, so my budget is small right now. Don't know what I'll do yet. One option is to pull it before I leave town for work and have it rebuilt while I'm gone. I drilled a couple of 3/32" holes in my thermostat to try and help reduce the temp and vent any air that may be trapped in the block. STILL running hot. Should I change the water pump even though it seems to be good? Anyway, I appreciate your responses.
Did you check the hoses for the overheating problem. With a truck that's been sitting for 4 years, you should start with replacement of all hoses and belts just on general principle. Have you cleaned the cooling system? 4 years sitting up can cause big problems even if the radiator was redone, you still have a lot of other areas which might be clogged.
It seems a bit over the top to me to replace the motor for overheating, bad carb and leaks. However, if you aren't much of a mechanic as you said, it's probably cheaper than paying someone to change all the gaskets and fix all these little issues. If you can change gaskets, you can change them all in one weekend (valve covers, timing cover, waterpump, oil pan). I'd also expect that your front main seal is leaking...my 83 did even after paying to have it changed.
As a side question...if you're not much of a mechanic, how are you going to change out the motor? Good luck.
