Is Anyone Running Without A Muffler?

I have a 97 F250 w/5.8L. Has anyone removed the stock muffler and just put a straight pipe in it's place? I would still have the cat. I was just wondering how loud it would be. The muffler is starting to get some holes in it and I thought I might just eliminate it, but I don't want the truck to be obnoxious. If anybody has had experience with this, maybe you could give me some sort of reference to go be. Thanks.

well buddy... I've got a 351 W in my truck as well... and just a few hours ago a hacksaw made business out of the old slightly rusted pipe that connected my muffler to the cats. I haven't even turned the key yet...

I have a close setup to yours. I'll let you know how it sounds tomorrow.

My '90 F150 302 doesn't have a muffler. It splits right behind the converters and goes to dual tail pipes. It is very quiet. It sounds fair at idle, but you can't even hear it going down the highway. I would like it to be a little louder to be honest.

A freind of mine ran with just cats on a mid 90's half-ton and it sounded pretty good to me.

okay... I drove it around today... no muffler, just 5 feet or so of straight pipe behind the cats.
It has a growl to it. I liked how it sounded, but for it to really be any good, it would have to be amplified. I could notice it, and so could my friends. I think that if I were to either remove a cat or add a couple bends to the pipe I'm adding (but not enough to take away the tone of straight) it would amplify it. Good sound, not VERY loud, but still quite louder than stock. and free: ).

I cut the muffler off of my 89 ford with a 302 in it, and it has a nice quiet rumble to it, not loud at all, but louder and more meaner sounding then stock.

Talking

i run 2 1/4 dual pipes on my 94 F150 302 with the cats still in place and no mufflers. it has a nice ble but is by no means obnoxious....my 5.8 Bronco with 3'' pipes and no muffler and gutted cats would be considered by many to be very obnoxious

Chop the muffler off, as long as you have cats that motor will still be quiet..Heck even without cats its not all that loud..

Replaced my muffler with pipe, exits behind the rear wheel like stock, sounds good & not too loud, (still has the cats).
