I have a '94 f150 with 5.0 (302) 4X4 auto. Recently, I have been experiencing what feels like a missing or a hesitating when I am taking off slowly or just crusing in overdrive. The problem; however, is sparatic. Just replaced my plugs a couple hundred miles ago. Any ideas? Oh yeah, sometimes my dash voltage meter will fluxuate as well. The problem seems to be getting worse. Any help would be apreciated, Thanks,
Just an idea... I had a vehicle doing just that and it ended up being the main computer. Others with far more experience will perhaps know how to test that or if that is a realistic possibility.
Just an update: on my way to work this morning, I didn't have any missing but, my dash voltage meter was noticably running on the high side. Yesterday morning I didn't have any problems on my way to work, but on my way home once when I took off from a stop, accelerating slowly, it was missing (or whatever it is doing) so bad that it almost stalled in the middle of the intersection.
Right now that Michigan weather is hard on a vehicle. Lots of times the dirt in a unchanged filter freezes and will cause problems. I lived in Detroit for over 30 years and worked at a few salvage yards and seen this problem many times.
Check the plug wires if they haven't been replaced lately. The boots tend to get hard and crack or have a fine pinhole in them allowing the spark to jump.
The fuel filter and/or pick up screen in the tanks. The crud gets slushy and cuts off the fuel supply. This is just a problem I have seen before. Hopefully it is the same case for you. As far as teh pick up screen, on older vehicles without the intank fuel pump we would just use a air hose to blow back into the tank to blow off the pick up screen and start the motor. Keep in mind this was at salvage yards and we only wanted to get the vehicle running to check out trans and things like this. I would check fuel filters on it though if still has them. I had a 2000 Jeep TJ that did not have a servicable filter on it.
I have not replaced the plug wires, but they don't look to be worn or cracked and I looked at it in the dark and could not see any spark jumping (not that that means that there isn't any). Thanks,
I don't have any way to pull codes. The CEL comes on and off all the time, it has ever since I have had the truck; but, I was told that that was probably because my truck has dual exhaust all the way from the engine back and it only has one Oxygen sensor.
Another update:
Yesterday, I drove to work with no problems; however, on my way home, I was stoped at a red light and when I took off it was missing quite bad and the more I pressed the accelerator the worse it did, it even back-fired a couple of times. Once it stopped messing up it ran fine (well, I only have a five minute drive to and from work).
This morning, I started my truck and was going to scrape my windows and it stalled, so I started it again and again it stalled; but, this time it wouldn't start. It was clicking (not turning over) like either the starter was stuck or the battery was too dead to turn it over. I guess I will find out a little more when I get home from work. Oh, I might add that it was somewhere between 7 and 10 deg. F this morning.
I went to advance auto and they said that because it was a 94 that they either couldn't or didn't know how to pull the codes??! I guess I will try autozone and see if the will or can.
You can also go to www.fordfuelinjection.com and it will how to pull the codes and what they meen also....After you pull the codes post them here and we will be glad to help....
