Service Engine Soon Light?

Hello to all, I am a new member (Familiar with the forum format thru another unrelated forum, though). I bought an 03 6.0 SD about four months ago. It was used, with 57K on it. CarFax revealed nothing, and I was not aware of Oasis until today (while reading here).

Overall it's been great, other than a intermittent chirping noise coming from under the hood on cold days. I can live with that, but this AM I cranked it up and the SES light stayed on. I drove it to the dealership and the SM told me to just keep driving it and to bring it back after the 1st of the year, as they were slammed. I also took it to my mechanic, but neither of his scanners could access the PCM.

I haven't really noticed anything different other than maybe slightly louder operation, and shifts in idle speed. I'm just mainly concerned about is it safe to drive it with the SES light on, and is it suddenly gonna quit on me when I'm 100 miles down the interstate?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The light in itself tells us nothing. You need to see if you can get a scanner on it to determine the code(s), then someone here should be able to help.

I think you can pull some codes via the odometer but, I do not remember how that works. Hopefully someone here will provide that info.

Good luck.

OK, I've been driving it with the light on....only problem I've had is it has lurched/jumped the RPMs a couple of times at a red light.

The light went out Thursday but came back on Friday morning when I first cranked it up. It was relatively mild Thursday but got cold Friday. It was pretty cold (mid 30's) when the light originally came on.

See if you local friendly AutoZone can put a scanner on it to read the codes.

to check the codes and other stuff with the odometer turn the key off. Hold the trip button in and while holding it in turn the key on. Continue to hold the trip button until it says test in the odometer display. Once it says test you can let go of it. Each time you press the trip button it goes to a different reading. You can also start your truck. to get out of this mode just turn the key off.
