4 Auto?

2003 Explorer. Yesterday was going up a snow covered hill in 4 auto seemed like it tried to engage. Felt like it could not make up its mind if it wanted 2 or 4. Is this normal? Does it go in and out of 4 rapidly? Went back up the hill and this time put in 4 high and engaged good, same with 4 low.

The module looks for wheel slip from the antilock brake module. If it sees slip, it will engage, then disengage to see if slip is still ocurring, if it is it re-engages.

ranger88a is correct. 4x4 auto only engages when it detects slippage at the rear wheels. I found out in my 97 Explorer when you had full snow coverage on ground and felt the 4x4 auto kicking in and out, I would just put into 4x4 high. I did this for better traction and also that why should I let the transfer case beat itself to death constantly switching the 4x4 on/off on/off....... I would assume that this would cause the transfer case to heat up. Use common sense. Engaging the 4x4 high is as easy as turning a switch (pre 2002) or pushing a button (post 2002).

Thanks for the replies, that is kind of what I thought, just seems that they should have a min. engagement time.
