I started my truck this morning (92 F150 4x4 300 I6 E4OD). It idles real high for a 10-20 seconds and then slows down. Is this normal? If so what is it doing for those first few seconds? I think it has always done this. I've owned it a year but my daughter is the one who always drives it.
I presently own a 1990 Ford F-150 with the inline six cylinder also, mine was two wheel drive until i modified it, but it did have the E4OD in it also and has done the same thing since i have owned it. My guess is that it does that the very same way that a carbeurated engine with an mechanical choke works. How high does it idle?
Yep, it suppose to do that. I have a 93 I6 2W drive. I guess the RPM's will get 1500 or so, for about as long as yours does, then drop to normal 700 RPM range. I usually tap on the gas to knock the RPM's down sooner. Then I take off.
"If so what is it doing for those first few seconds?"
I am not to sure about the details. May be one of the Ford tech will answer that question.
What do you consider high RPMs? All cars/trucks I have seen always idles with a higher RPM to warm up the engine during a cold start. It's built into the PCM. You should have noticed this from day 1.
I did say that "I think it has always done this." That kinda equates to your snide "day 1" comment. And you did answer my question with "to warm up the engine during a cold start" and "it's built into the PCM." That's all I wanted to know.
My bad. Sorry willf. I usually try to ignore when something sounds nasty. I figure that I probably sometimes type up something that may read nasty when not meant to. And I definitely don't ever try to do that.
Yeah, my daughter started driving it because it was the only other thing to drive. I have a 72 F100 and my wife drives the Taurus. You know, when you're a kid you'll drive anything even though you'd rather drive something else. She would kind of make comments like "can we paint it", and "I wish I could drive the Taurus", etc. But then a few months back some of the boys in school tell her what a cool truck it is and she gets all kinds of positive comments. It's a short box with a 2" lift and 33" tires. It has that blue metallic paint that is falling off so it ain't pretty, but it does look tough. Well after boys tell her how cool it is, she comes home and I overhear her telling my wife "I think I'll keep the truck after all." I started laughing and told her that "I had never planned on getting rid of it." We had a good laugh over all of that. She really likes it now. Boys??
