i have just got 2 cars for almost nothing.one is a 77 ltd with 351m and the other is an 85 crown vic with the 302 cfi both run pretty good. i am going to build and put one of them in a 94 mustang(v6) and was wondering which would be better to build.i know the 351 because of the cubes is what everybody will probally say but i dont know if either of these motors have in problems or limits for the build
While the 351 can be built to really run, $ for $ and ease of installation, the 302 would be my choice also. They can also be stroked to 347 and make 95% the power of the 351 if we compare apples to apples.
The 351,400m Are Junk Motors, They Make Better Boat Ancors, Than Power Plants. The 302 Is Tried And True, been Around Forever. The After Market For The 302 Is Endless. They Have Stroker Motors, trubo:s,super Chargers, And The List Goes On. 302 All The Way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
302 is in my opinion other than the 351 Cleveland one of the best Ford motors in production. The 351m and the 400 were used in light-duty trucks starting in the 1977 model year I believe so the 302 would be my choice for a car, plus the 302 revs a lil bit higher. <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /><O:P>

1.)There is no such thing as a 400M, its just a 400
2.)Id hardly call it a boat anchor, and Id far from call them junk motors, the 400 has the longest stock stroke of any Ford motor, its a torque monster
3.)Im a big fan of 302s, but I own one in an 82, and Im working hard and spending a lot of money to make it comfortable in a truck.... including mods, and changing gear ratios so that it can wind up into the RPM range where it makes power, as much as I love 302s, they dont belong in a truck thats going to work hard, and the 400 is hands down a better truck motor (351M too for that matter)
This Guy Wants A Motor For A Mustang, Thats Why I Push The 302. It:s Lighter With A Larger Artermarket. The 302 Is Lihgt For A Truck As Far As Performance, But Is Doable. I Had 2 400"s, One In A 79 F-250, And One In A 77 F-250. Both Sheered Distibutor Pins On A Regular Bases. The 79 Spun A Rod Bearing With 23,000 Miles. Hp Was Much To Be Desired As Well. In Fairness, Hp In Those Years Were None Existent Do To Low Compresion In All Stock Motors. Not Out To Afined Anybody, Just Didn"t Have Any Luck With The 400 And Farm Use. And Others That I Have Talked To, Say The 351m Was No Better.
302, the money you spend getting the M block (yes a 351 and 400 can both have an M behind them, since they are built in an M block) into your mustang will be better spent on modding your 302. 302s are a dime a dozen, huge aftermarket, and fit in your engine bay better. You wont want to be trying to turn a wrench in your mustangs engine bay if you have a 400 in there. Go with the 302, trust in another mustang owner....but i would sell both and pick up at least an 87 5.0L as they have forged pistons and e7 heads, a cam definately from an H0 mustang 5.0.... you should join stangnet.com they will show you the way
No a 400 is not a 400M, the only engines Ford used letter designations on are the three 351's 351C/M/W. The 400 is just a plain 400 like a 302 or 289 or 428 or 429 or 460... The "M" block description is kind of a misnomer and only came into (mis)use after the 351M was produced.
its the same block, exactly. To get technical youre right, the 351 in that block is a modified 400, hence 351M (modified from a 400)...but why would you want to argue such a minute detail. Maybe its one of your pet peeves I dont know. Talk to the majority of gearheads and they just generalize the 2 as an M, whether it be 351 or 400. Personally I dont care.
the 302 is the way to go for your stang, or a windsor..
