I'm looking at replacing the PS hoses on my truck as they are starting to weep. I've had the high pressure one reterminated at the pump as the swivel was leaking but now the low pressure one is leaking too. I note it has a spiral of steel hose on the axle as a cooler and wonder if I really need it in the UK. I've looked on the net for a replacement hose but so far no one has it so I assume its a dealer only part.
Could I not just replace the whole pipe with a shorter flex hose to the bottom of the pump and forget the cooler?
Also it seems like there is a minimal clip holding the hose on the pump resivoir - like the ones on brake vacuum lines. Is this correct? Would replacing it with a spiral-drive (jubile clip) hose clamp help?
You should probably stay with the cooler, the stock PS pumps can go bad fast enough the way it is. That said, I'm not sure if it is required to be there. That clip holding the hose to the pump is the correct one. As long as it still clamps a little, it probably is fine. Replacing it with a spiral drive would just make it easier to get the hose off, as the clamp that is on there now can be a pain to get off.
The clips are enough to hold the hose on the low pressure side as long as the hose is in decent shape. (As the hoses age they get brittle from the inside out and it prevents the end of the hose from sealing tight against the hose barbs). The pressure through the system on the low pressure side is less than that of the cooling system in the truck. Hence only the high-pressure hose is the one that must be replaced with a pre-formed high pressure unit. The hose for the low pressure side can be replaced with standard fuel line/oil cooler hose from any parts suppliers. Often the clips that hold the old hose in place snap when you remove them. I always replace them with worm-drive clamps just because they are less apt to snap or lose tension over time. I'll "third" the recommendation to keep the factory "cooler". The Ford PS pump is a P.O.S. if you ask me. Anything to help it live a bit longer is a good thing. Considering Ford used the same pump on everything they made from Escorts through the F-series trucks it makes one wonder which vehicle steering system it was really designed to handle.
I suppose the easy solution is to cut the old rubber hose off the cooler and just replace that bit. I was initially assuming I'd need to replace the whole lot. *feeling dumb*
