My 78 f150 w/new 400 stalls once about every 50 miles. Once it stalls, I wait about 30 seconds & it fires right up & runs like nothing happened. It has a new E-brock intake & 1406 4brl carb, distributor, cdi, ect. Coil has not been touched. I have a replacement fuel pump but haven't put it on yet! Sometimes it does when it's only been running for 5 minutes or sometimes after an hour. It seems to do it under very light throttle, but has also stalled under load. I was convinced it was lack of fuel so I changed the filter & it did it again. The truck runs excellent at all other times. I could use some opinions!
Sounds just like the ignition module to me. My '79 F-350 4x4 had the same problems. I would drive it and it would stop, just like someone turning the key off. I replaced the module and now, years later it hasn't done it since.
Make sure you get a good module. My was doing the same and it took 4 module before it stopped. First three from checker the last one from napa. Nothering against checker, napa told me that the copmany that makes the just had a recall and the had already got the new ones in. This was about five years ago.
Just remember that if it still does it, double check the module.
I suggest going with a different ignition system all around- you can get an hei dizzy w coil system off ebay fo about $100- get rid of all that wiring that eventually goes bad as well as the module etc. two wires- hot and rpm guage. I'll be doing that soon.
The "one wire" HEI systems are simple but you loose the timing retard function on start feature that reduces the load on the starter increasing its life which is a simple tradeoff. At least with the HEI systems you can get replacement GM parts for them off the shelf at any parts store. You can get replacements for the DS units at any parts store also but some do not have the good motorcraft modules. If you want a good Duraspark ignition you need to buy or find a Motorcraft ignition module. I have had nothing but grief and constant failures with the aftermarket Duraspark ignition modules. I have not had any problems with the wiring on the stock systems unless they were butchered by someone.
