Hey guys, I have a 1977 F-150 with the ford 9 rear. I know mini-spools are probably not reccommended, but I've made up my mind.
All I need to know is what spline is the axle shafts in my 9? Were they all the same? Or am I going to have to pull a shaft?
Also, what all is needed when buying a mini-spool? Obviously the mini-spool... But what about a cross pin? Are those universal? Will I need a basic install kit since I'll have to open her up?
Don't run it on the street. They are for off road only because they are dangerous on the street. Spending time in a cell for criminal negligence or manslaughter is not a good way to have fun.
I'd also be ce curious about putting one in the front 44. This is a trail rig only, no road time. Is the dana 44 30 spline? Need anything special since its the front axle?
I am not an expert on the D44 front axle but AFAIK they normally use a locker of some sort up front with a spool in the rear for offroad. There is lots of info on that in this forum as well as the offroad forum. Also AFAIK there are codes on your axle housing that refer to bom's for the axle that will tell you what # of splines it came with originally. The operative word here is originally tho...
When you do a mini spool swap in the rear, all it does is replace the side gears. You don't need an install kit, but will need gaskets. The stock cross pin should work. I think they sell upgraded ones to handle the extra stress, but shouldn't be mandatory. As far as the front, I am pretty sure they are 30 spline inners. I had mine apart, but can't remember. For doing the front, you will need all the tools to take it apart. Mainly, you need a spindle nut socket. You can buy them at any auto parts store. They have 4 teeth on them that engage the nuts. Other than that, just basic hand tools.
The 9" should be 31 splines. The front D44 should be 30. Of course, there is only one way to find out for sure. Who knows what previous owners have done to the truck. I've seen some interesting modifications before.
Should be all, but everytime I do something it turns into a can of worms. As far as the 44, I believe they are the same. Look on ebay, there were dana 44 mini spools for around $60.
