In reading another post I wondered......?
What wild ideas have been incorporated into customizing the front grills of 54, 55 and 56 F100's ???
I have a 54 and want to change it up because the original grill seems to be too pitted (in my opinion) to be rechromed. I did look at a pontiac grill, as did another guy on this site, but did not pursue it...I wish I had-his looks great!
But what have the great "fat-fendered" minds out there come up with on thier trucks??? Pictures and details PLEASE.
hey Hotrod48,
Thanks! I got a big grin over some of those.....I kinda liked the last one too, it kept a little of the stock flair...not too "Herman Munster-ish"!
I am looking for ideas and want to do something unusual yet classy and subtle...while keeping the F100 54-ish flavor.
When I was looking for a grille treatment to do - My initial thought was to copy Jim Richmond's because I fell in love with I the moment I saw it. But wanting to be original, I searched high and low for other possibilities.
- The 54 Chev. was done extensively throughout the 60s but didn't turn my crank.
- 54 Plymouth had possibilities, but it's fairly busy.
- There were some Ford grilles from 49 to about 55 that seemed interesting.
I really think a floating chrome bar about 3 or 4 inches wide in the center going out to dull points on the ends, ending about 3 or 4 inches before the stock buckets would look good. The front edge would be pointed with convex curves back to the rear edges.. Just a thought....
In the end, my love for Jim's grille won out.....at least I did the flush led signals which was a departure from what he did.....
e william, I think you should rechrome your 54 grill and keep it on the truck, that's the one thing on the truck that stands out and tells people what it really is, i own a 54 also and when it's finished it will have a chrome 54 grill back in it, My ex-wife hated the 54 grill because she said it looked like two big ol'e female.... well, i think you know what i mean! anyway just my opinion, what ever way you choose to go good luck with it.
I too have been searching the net and car shows looking for variations (mainly paint treatement) on the stock 54 grill. I'm thinking there's got to be a two-tone graphic that would minimze some of its crudeness yet highlight some of the cool features. I specifically like the three big square holes in the center and even the two 'fangs'. Wondering if you could carry the 3 hole affect into the hood paint (racing stripes?) or even a hood scoop. I was even thinking you could flip the grill 180 degress and have the fangs up vs. down.
I agree with 54fever that it should remain identifiable as a 54.
But with big ideas and little skill, I'll likely just black out everything behind the grill and paint the grill to match the body. It's fun to dream...
A 55 grille is the best looking of the 53-56 grilles and would probably bolt in...

I agree! I did however cut 1" off the back of the headlight tub to get the headlight/grille to set farther back. I didn't like the way the headlights projected beyond the front side edges of the fenders.

I mocked up the flipped 54 grill in a photo editor and added it to my gallery. The phot work is a little crude, but you get the picture. I still think this could be interesting...
I like the idea of thinning the grill to get it to set back further. Not sure how easily that would work with the 54's fangs, but I'm sure it's doable.
