Heatshield Destruction <vs>Downpipe Install ...???

.............I will be using my 99 PSD strictly for towing !! I have decided to go with a 3.5 inch downpipe into a full 4 inch system with a Walker BTM . Will this install puncture or screwup my heatshield . Ford installed the heatshield for a very good reason and I DON'T want the integrity breeched . I'm looking for input from those who have either installed their system Themselves or "had" their system installed . Thanks , s.kuteman

it will be hard to stuff a walker BTM into the system, as the inlet and outlet of the BTM is designed for 3.5'' piping. although, most exhaust systems have a muffler with a "straight through" design, which is very similar to the BTM. i have a 4'' system, and i did not have to move the heat shield, nor is it in the way of anything. i have a MBRP system, and it is superior in design/bends. a 4'' downpipe will fit with no rubbing issues whatsoever, i could easily fit a 5'' downpipe and still have room, because there is about an inch radius around the pipe before it hits anything.

since you are towing, i would seriously consider the 4'' downpipe. the only real advantages of a smaller downpipe is low-rpm power. since you are towing, i believe most of your rpm's will be over 1750. i have a 4'' turbo back system, and i routinely see 1000-1400 cruising speed, say coming into a 35mph zone, if i dont take OD off, it will run about 1100 rpm, and it still has ALOT of power for that speed. plus the smaller downpipe keeps heat. a larger one will reduce EGT's, and that adds longevity.

why do you want a 3.5'' DP compared to a 4''?

You can ceramic coat the down pipe, It will hold the heat in the pipe and eliminate the use of heat shields. I do ceramic coating and it works great on snowmobile pipes.

i am thinking about getting the thermal wrap, doing my intercooler pipes and also my downpipe. it will keep the engine alot cooler IMO.

i was just looking on ebay, and it looks to me like i am going to wrap my downpipe and at least my hot-side intercooler pipe, in the near future. keeps under hood temps down! if only i could get to my up-pipes easily!
