I know its hard to explain a noise but after taking off from a stoplight last night something gave way. It started making a loud thumping noise under the hood. I initially thought something from the exhaust came apart but I couldn't locate anything. I didn't appear to loose any power but you never know as I drove it real slow the mile or so I had left to go. Any suggestions?
does it make a thumping noise, appearing to come from the floorboard area, when hitting a bump or going on an uneven surface at moderate speed? (a speedbump)
if so, that would be your swaybar bushings. the ones that connect the axle to the swaybar itself. good luck.
Yeah I was looking at it while it was running. The belt was ok. It is really loud and it sounds like a freight train chugging along. It sounds like it might be coming out of the intake but I couldn't be sure. I was wondering if it was something around the turbo that went bad but I really have no clue right now.
Thats something I'll look at. I'll try to explain it a little better...maybe thumping wasn't the right word to describe it.
The thump really sound like it is air related and it keeps perfect time with the engine no matter what the RPM's. Only it is coming from under the hood and extremely loud. My initial thought was that the exhaust or an intercooler boot had come loose but I din't notice anything with them.
That probably didn't explain it any better but...I'm going to have someone look at it tomorrow. At least if it is something major I still have the warranty.
What does it sound like if it has an injector problem or one goes bad?
Just one more thing to check, but have you looked at the fan housing? Another poster noted nearly identical symptoms as you describe, and after a ton of time and effort, discovered the fan housing was loose and bouncing around.
It changes with engine speed and I guy I had look at it Monday morning confirmed it was something internal. Next stop was the dealership. All I can say is thank God for the 100K mile warranty. I had about 90k on it.
I have now talked to the dealer and they pulled the valve covers thinking it might be a rocker or something easy but turned out that wasn't the problem. Last I was told they were going to have to tear it down further before they knew what exactly the problem was.
Well I talked to the dealer today and they are still waiting to find out what exactly the problem is. They are finishing up a few diesels that were before me because they have to tear it down more before they find the problem. I just hope they don't try to get out of warranty work because of any aftermarket additions.
Anybody have any suggestions of what I should have them look at or do while they are in there? I'm kind of dissapointed because the truck only had about 90k miles on it and I try to take really good care of it and do all the maintenace on time. I was hoping to have this for a long time before any major problems like this.
