88 B2 2.9/at drove around all day fine, went back out to leave and it made a slight click then nothing. So I jumped the starter sol/relay over on the inner fender and it started fine. So I put on a new sol/relay and still does the same thing. Will not turn over with the key but if jump the sol/relay over it starts right up.
Any ideas where the best place to check is?
Thanks
Hi. Take the key switch cover off and there is a little box where your key activates yoru starter. 8 to 10 wires on the plug in. just replace that switch. The switch isheld by 2 screws.
The starter circuit is very simple. Look on the side of the starter relay & you will find a wire with a rubber boot. When you turn the key to start the ignition switch puts 12 volts on that wire, the starter relay closes & sends 12 volts to the starter.
Try this, remove the rubber boot from the starter relay & jump 12 volts to the "pin" were the boot was. Does it crank?
If it does, the most likely problem is a bad ignition switch, or a bad neutral safety switch.
Thanks, I have a wiring diagram in a Haynes manual, but I,m not great with wiring.
I changed the ignition switch but still nothing. I looked for the neutral safety switch. It has two sets of wires going into the side of the transmission. Anybody know for sure where the neutral safety switch is? It is 4sd/od auto on the floor with the Mustang style shifter. The Haynes manual does not much info on it.
I think I found it but it has 5 wires red, white, black, purple, and kinda pink. I found a pic of it on the net. But have no idea which wires are which. When I unhooked it it killed the backup lights.
Thats the right switch, but it looks like some genius has rewired it & changed the color coding.
If the rubber boot at the starter relay is still the right color-red/light blue- try this.
Reconnect the neutral switch&on the drivers side fender, theres a black 8 wire connector, one of the wires should be red/light blue. Open the connector & connect your voltmeter between the female red/light blue & ground. Run a piece of extra wire to the negative post of the battery & use that for your ground.
Have someone turn the key to start & you should read 12 volts.
If you do there is a break in the wire somewhere between the connector & the starter relay. If you dont get 12 volts, the neutral switch is shot or theres a break in the wire somewhere between the connector & the ignition switch.
i bet the click i the relays shuting off acesseries for starting to put a lesser load on the battery mine dose that and so do all cars so i wouldnt investigate the click sound to much
