My dad is an origanal owner of a 1981 ford fairmont durango. The vehical is still in good condition and very driveable. Body in good shape. still has orig paint even. I understand there were very few of these made. I have been searching the internet for the real history and not finding any. My dad is now 87 yrs old and in need of money greatly for medical expences. Is this durango worth anything?? Does any one know the real history on how many were made.

Hello- Welcome to FTE! I have moved your post to the specialized forum we have here for your question. Check out the list of tech forums we have here. There is a wealth of information and expertise here to help you. There are a number of links in my sig below to help you also. Have fun!
If it's a real durango then it is very rare, i beleive production was like 5000 or so. I've seen one real durango on ebay and a couple of aftermarket trucks made by slicing the back roof off of a Futura coupe (i guess thats how ford did it though. The genuine durango i saw had a "buy it now" of $6500 i think, but i cant remember if it sold or not.
The fairmont/zephyr page has good information that might get you started.
I know i've seen a webpage with specific information on Durangos but I'm still trying to find it.
Does the truck have a functioning tailgate? I cant remember if real durangos had functioning ones or just a regular tail-light & license plate valance.
yes the 1981 ford fairmont durango has a functioning tail gate it came that way new. I've heard they only made 23, or 81, or 800, ??? I will keep searching thanks for the links. I would love it if you found anything else. thanks again.
I dont know why i threw out 5000 were produced - i thought i heard it somewhere, but maybe it is in the low hundreds. Either way, its rare enough and a unique enough vehicle to be a collectible and worth probably twice your average fairmont (wait, thats still only $400, so its probably worth A LOT more than your average fairmont if you can find the right buyer.)
A mint, low mileage durango was on E-bizzle a while ago and it had a lot of information in the description. My advice would be to search eBay like a hawk for anything related to a durango. Maybe one will actually show up but at the very least you might find some original brochures that you can cop some info off of.
"Collectible Automobile" did an article on the Durango a few years ago, with some nice photographs- any chance your Dad's car was one of them? I remember they photographed a red one, and a white one with a tan top. Interesting little vehicle; I thought it was cool how the B-pillar slope of a Fairmont Futura was just made for a vehicle like this.
I don't know what they are worth but my grandfather has one.I'm lookin at it out the window right now. It should have come in the original maroon color he says he got it from pasadena and thats the only place he knew of that had it then and that they are quite rare.
I have a Durango, have owned it for 10 years. There were 10 Durango Prototypes built by National Coach in Pasadena Calif.
There is an article on the First Prototype in Collector Car Magazine.
Other Custom Coach builders around the country built a hand full combined, there were probably less than 20 ever built. There have been several listed on E Bay and in the Auto Trader. They are worth (like everything else) whatever you can get someone to pay you for it.
