I have an old beattin to death 81 f150 2wd with a 300i and a c4.Well ive been thinking about bringing this guy back to life with a new purpose.
Im not concerned about the motor or trans to much, when they die ill find a sutable replacement. What my question to you guys is should i go all out and build a full race truck or make a pre-runner that will still be street legal.
The desert racing sieres is mostly held in the summer, when im rock crawlling.
Ther are some cool suspension setups out there, and im eyeing the set up from supperlift(im not a fan of there 4x setups)for a pre-runner.For the race its quater eillipticall rear springs and coil overs. The front im stuck with the short sided twin i beam.My other ford 2x is a 71 witch has the evan length i beams,of witch ive been told is ideal for desert racing. There is no way im going to chop that truck.Plus thats my tow rig.
The last thing i need really is to dump more money into another truck but us ford guys arnt right in the head.
Sounds like some ideas floating around in my head. I would say keep it street legal. The main reason I would like a pre-runner is for the speed and still remain some off-road abilities. I would would like to hear/see some long travel (More less long travel any way) set ups for the twin i-beam that aren't too expensive, if that's even possible. Anyone have any pics of an 1980-86 with pre-runner fenders? I would also like to hear more ideas and set-ups for this.
Well the fiberglass fenders are probly going to be the most costly part.I thinking fuel cell in the bed.
This truck is a standerd cab long bed.I have seen guys ues these in the stock class.Definitly a full cage and tube bumpers.
Tires are somting to pounder over.I was thingking like 33's or 35's maybe as small as 31's.I saw a chevy at the parts store that was p-r'ed out,and he had 37"bfg baja's.Those cost more then my swampers.
Hey hot rod have you ever thought about a pre-runner 51 ford f1?

I noticed the fenders are quite pricey and I haven't seen any pre-runner fenders for the 80-86 flareside, just the newer ones (Since my 81 is a flareside). I really wouldn't want/need a cage, even though it would be a good idea, because I wouldn't run in any events, just mainly to play around with. I was thinking somewhere in the 33-35" tire range, not sure which tire though. I don't know if I will even do any of this, I may lower the truck, I'm still undecided.

I have seen a 48-50 F-1 pre-runner. It has been a few years back in one of my buddies 4-wd magazines, I thought it was pretty cool.
I seen for a breef moment a stepside/flareside?Fly across the road in front of me during the las vegas to reno off road race earlyer this year.I dont know the make and could not tell much other then the bed.Dot closes the highway when the racers cross. The racers are moving at a good clip,id say in the 70 to 90 mile per hour range. When the groop the i saw hit the eage of the highway they cought some big time air.
I tell ya that looks fun and is the complete opasite of the rock crawling that i normaly do.Rather then going slow and technical up the trail its ***** to the wall and stand on the gas!
This gets me to thinking about the motor that i would swap in later.Maybe a stroked 351w.
It looks very fun. I don't think I could ever do rock cralwing, much to slow for me. If I could find a somewhat cheap way to get a fair amount of travel in the front, I would maybe do it. I don't know, too many decisions and ideas for my 81. Good luck with yours though.
