How do you know if you have a bad thermostat or Temperature Sending Unit?
My Explorer temp gauge barely rises above the "C" on my temperature gauge every since it has become cold here. Every once in awhile i can be at a light or something and it will slowly rise about a 1/4 of the way but as soon as i start moving again the needle drops back to the "C".
I get excellent heat and it does not take a long time at all for my truck to heat up. So heat is not a problem.
My upper radiator hose is gets warm.
Not sure why my temperature gauge reads cold.
Any suggestions.
But if i have a weak thermostat wouldn't that cause for bad heat output?
Also, if i chose not to do anything about the thermostat now am i harming my vehicle? It has about 102,000 miles. The t-stat that i have in there now is the 2nd one. I replaced the original at about 60,000 miles.
Again, i get excellent heat, just annoying not really seeing my temp gauge not moving so much.
I'd replace the thermostat. It sounds like it's sticking open which isn't a major problem until/if it sticks closed. At that point it will overheat and could be very damaging. Changing the Tstat is easy and inexpensive. Just my 2 cents...
I agree, it sounds like the T-stat, but it could be the sending unit. Since they are only 6 or 7 bucks, you might want to replace it & see if you get lucky.
If you really feel like doing so, replace the sender and t-stat, but I get the same cool reading from my gauge in So Tex, with the aforementioned parts being replaced last December...I'm not worried.
