block heaters

Are you supposed to be able to hear the block heater when it is plugged in? The block heaters in both GM's have an audible "sizzle/hiss", but when I plugged the Cougar in I couldn't hear anything. I don't mind winter, but when stuff breaks when it's cold . . . .

Some do...some don't.

That's why I made a 110 v test light that shows the circuit is complete.

Depending on the block heater, it may have a small fan to circulate coolant and that produces a buzz, especially if it is in a hose vs. just a heating coil in the block.

Which style is better? Obviously just cutting a section of radiator hose out and clamping a fitting in is easier. but which style is more efficient/safer for the engine as a whole? Just wondering cause it is starting to get cold around here and the kids toys over took the trucks parking spot in the garage.
