If I remember right there is a fuse in the engine bay, and if you pull it, it disables the A4WD. Although, I can't remember which one it was exactly.

Pull Out The #104 Fuse Fron The Fuse Panel Under The Hood, It Is Only For The 4wd Clutch And Transfercase Motor. The Only Thing Is That When You Connect It Back Your 4wd Will Not Work. I Actually Just Took Care Of This Problem This Morning. You Have To Disconnect Your Battery For 30 Min Or More To Reset The Computers, And Then It Will Be Fine. Hope This Helps You.

Shane, I really never noticed much difference in fuel mileage but strange enough, I really noticed a difference in the way it handled. I didn't feel the wondering I usually feel with it. Like usually cruising down the highway I feel like I am always correcting the steering, but with the 4awd disabled I could see a noticable difference. Also, we pull our 5800lb travel trailer with it and it just seems to have more torq disabled. Maybe it is in my head, but either way can't wait til spring so wify will let me disable it again. Brian

On mine, if the fuse is out, I cannot use 4wh or 4wL.

Just leave it in A4WD and then you don't have to worry about any unforeseen circumstances. Your MPG won't suffer and that is what the truck was designed for.

I wander why the 97/98 expys that have 4X4 but also a 2wd option on the switch are rated to get better gas milage than the AWD models? Maybe it was a dealer miss print but when I was shopping for my expy I was looking at a '98 5.4L expy that on the window sticker said it got something like 15mpg city and close to 20 on the highway.

only powering 2 wheels will give you better gas mileage than powering 4 wheels.

Also from my understanding if you drive in A4WD, you still only power 2 wheels, unless you lose traction in the rear, then it will power the front wheels. (hince Automatic 4WD)
