Shaving Gutters

Anyone have any tips or tricks on how to shave the gutters from a '56. I am working with my father on bringing our truck back to life. is this a common modification? Ours are rusted out and need metal work anyway. My thoughts were to loose them for a cleaner custom look.

Thanks,
Matt

Welcome to the site. I can't help you with your question, but a few here have done it and I'm sure they will be along shortly. Good luck.

jonesey -

Shaving the drip rail is not a common mod, but I have seen it done on a few 53-56 trucks. I like the look of it a lot and plan to do it myself this winter on my 56.

The biggest worry about shaving this is that the cab top, cab side and gutter are simply three pieces that are flat to each other thru the gutter area and spotwelded together. Once the spotwelded section is removed, everything can move relative to each other. Realignment is very difficult.

I plan to remove the drip rail in small sections and reweld the cab seam thru that area as I go.

Randy Jack,
The way I shaved mine on my 54 is the same as you are talking about, approx. 5-6 inch sections, then patching them back. Are you talking about shaving it and making it one big curve at the front of the cab, or stepping it like mine in my gallery(like Kevin Lee's 54 that was in Classic Trucks). I did not find it to be too difficult to do my driprail, but I think doing it in sections is easier.
Jonesey,
Which shave style are you planning on doing, the total smooth on the front of the cab, or where you just take the outer portion of the driprail off and making it look like a step on it. Mine is the latter of the 2, check it out in my gallery, there should be a good side profile shot of it. If you have any questions on how to do the drip rail like I did, feel free to ask.

i shaved the drip rails off my 53. just like everyone says. cut small sections.
i cut about 2 inches at a time then tack welded as i went along. if you cut to far the seams will split apart, good luck...

Thanks,

It sounds like it will be fairly staight forward. And I just want to remove the drip rail. so no huge modifications necessary.
