I am just now getting around to getting new exhaust on my 77 f 150 with 351 and was curious if anyone had suggestions on what exhaust is preferred by ya'll
i really want something throaty but not overwhelmingly loud, anything is helpful
thanks guys
I agree with flow masters.
I will make one suggestion though, have the exhaust pipes exit behind the wheels not straight back. I had mine straight back exiting under the rear bumper. I looked nice but any time you load the truck you have to shut the engine off or be over come by exhaust fumes. Once I backed into a snow bank and clogged one pipe real good, froze solid. I finally had them moved because they were in the way of the hitch I had to install.
I did one of my trucks with one pipe exiting each side, after the axle. Worked and sounded great with glass packs. It was quiet when idling, but could get very loud under hard acceleration. I feel too old for that now, and love Flowmaster sound.
My current truck has a bottle type muffler (X2), and I ran both pipes out the passenger side, before the wheel. I actually really like this setup. Nice rumble, and totally different sound than with the longer pipes on my 460.
Try to find someone with a similar truck who has the sound you like, then try to stop them and ask what the system is.
I didn't know about the rear exit fume problem, but I do know that a turn-down before the axle gives you some weird resonating throughout the truck at different speeds.
Don't try to save money by avoiding the axle pieces, unless exiting the sides.

My trucks previous owner had reg mufflers with dual pipes and they turn down before the rear axle under the truck, So that is why it is so loud down the road. I know that it makes alot of dust going down dirt roads with exaust blowing at the ground. I was thinking about going a single 3" turning out before the axle with a Flowmaster or Magnaflow

Second the Magnaflow mufflers, I really like them! Great sound when you get on it without the raspy sound that many mufflers make (including Flowmasters). Magnaflows put out a steady rumble that sounds good.
I really like my series 50 flow masters with 2 1/2" pipe all the way back to the bumper where they turn down and out. The turn keeps me from blowing black water on the garage door and the wifes car when I start it cold.
