I was reading the owners manual for my 97 expi. It says not to engage the A4wd or 4WD at speeds above 55mph. Once engaged, how fast can I drive? I called the ford dealer near me and they had no idea but guessed 55. To me, it seams that once the mechanics in the transfer case have swithed, I should be fine at higher speeds. Any input would be great. Thanks!
I was reading a story in Truck Trend about them putting a Dmax diesel and an Allison Auto in a late 80's half ton 4wd. They said to get the best times at the strip they lauched in 4HI and their trap speeds were over 100 mph so I would think fords would be atleast as good. Not to say that anyone would want to go that fast in 4WD much, but I guess it can be done.
In A4WD you can go as fast as you want to, Ford only wants you to keep engagement speed below 55mph.
As for 4HI, I seem to recall a Ford commercial a few years ago where one of the NASCAR boys was driving a F150 in 4HI around one of the ovals at over 100mph, in the dry, to show how stout the 4WD system is.
I've personally gone 60mph on dirt and gravel roads in the summer, and on heavy snow days have sometimes gone 55mph on the freeway. I guess the top speed limit is up to you.
Remember, the A4WD doesn't do anything until it senses rear wheel slippage. That would be some feat to spin the rear wheels at highway speed. I leave mine on all the time.
