I agree andy. If my truck is in 4 wheel drive (front end locked in and 4HI engaged) and you try to make a turn, have fun. The front end will skip along. Now if your front end is locked in, without the shifter in 4 wheel, It wont do that.
You are correct though as far as it being in 4 wheel doing damage, but leaving the hubs locked in by themselves (without the transfer case engaged),it won't hurt them (I don't think).
Actually the more I think about it, Willf you were right. I didn't interpret that correctly. If your front end is locked in, including your TC, yes it will put the power to the front and rears equally. I was thinking if just the TC was engaged into 4, or the hubs themselves. I appologize for that one my friend
