Under medium load (2000 lb trailer, mountain grades, 8000 ft elev) I hear a loud chirping or chugging of air from under hood and some loss of power. The shop is telling me the wastegate is sticking due to carbon buildup. They can clean it for a band-aid fix, but want to replace the turbo ***'y for a permanent fix (for $1300!!). Does anyone have any other ideas?
I'm averaging $300/mo in maintenance on this truck and I'm about out of patience. Please help! Thanks.
I am sure the much more knowledgable guys will step in shortly, but could this be the turbo surge problem many people have complained about? The wastegate only regulates boost to a certain limit the way I understand it, not completely dumping all boost.
Kind of makes you wonder how some shops stay in business.....
Clean the carbon off of the wastegate to stop turbo surge. My question is this: How often does the wastegate stick? I mean, even under moderate driving conditions and whatnot, the wastegate always ends up dumping boost. Besides, if your wastegat IS sticking shut, you've got some boost issues that can kill your turbo in short order.
There are a couple WAY CHEAPER ways to fix this problem. I have to put on an ATS housing one of these days (to fix the same problem), but till then I just keep my foot out of it.
Your wastegate is NOT the problem!!!
You are experiencing turbo stall.
Easily cured with a Wicked wheel, 100% effective on the Tow/Haul setting for your Predator, a little less effective on the higher settings. About $80.00 and a saturday afternoon putting it in. Johnny8 did an EXCELLENT writeup on how to change it out.
Or an ATS turbo housing. About $400.00 +/- and a saturday afternoon. 100% effective on all settings.
Or a van turbo with a bigger exhaust housing with a Wicked Wheel. Mech2161 runs with that setup and uses some huge injectors along with it. Most expensive option.
There's other options out there for your turbo setup.
It's not the wastegate!
Yeah, like I said...kinda makes you wonder how shops like that stay in business. Let's see.....You take in your truck to have them "clean the carbon off of the wastegate" and when you get it back it does the same thing. What would be their excuse? Oh, it's too far gone to fix this way. We'll need to replace the turbocharger itself. They get a factory 'charger and what's this? It still does it.
What would they actually do to 'fix' the problem? HA HA
I will be getting the ATS compressor housing one of these days due to the 'better' (IMO) fix.

All we have to do is get every Ford truck owner everywhere to frequent this site and the days of the "shady" mechanic will be over.
