Emergency Brake Cable Adjustment

Y'all don't beat me up too bad on this but how do you even out the adjustment on the emergency brake cables? The overall length is correct but the cable on the passenger side is about two inches too long and you can hear it banging around on the muffler as you drive. There is no adjustment that I am aware of for each side - so how do I resolve this?

The front end of each brake cable mounts into a equalizer bracket bar which is about half way up the truck.

The adjustment is made by turning a nut on the main threaded bolt.

The cables usually are placed through a rubber strap to hold them up away from the ground.

By adjusting it this way (which I have done) I get one side the right length while leaving the other side loose.

It sounds like one cable is wrong then.

Do you have any tags on those cables to ID them ?

I haven't checked. This is my newest purchase and by the looks of them they are factory. I bought the 76 F150 from the original owner. To my knowledge the only modification was to swap out the 390 for a 302.

Perhaps there's a problem inside the drum, where one is not attached correctly or the shoes are seriously out of adjustment.

I have measured many parking brake cables under regular cabs. I found very many different length cables, and I am not sure why. It doesn't really matter what length if they are placed away from anything that can make noise. My trucks have typically come with springs that connect the cables to a hole in the frame. Keeps them from dragging on the ground (not quite, but seeing them under there sucks)
