Why 87-96?

Excuse my dumbness but why is this forum for 87-96 only? Was there a design change before and after those years? That's my guess. I need to go to history class I know. Was 96 when Ford went to the rounder body style?

'97 brought the new F150 design, and pre-87 were for the most part non-EFI. The '87-'96 are for the most part, all EFI and all have very similar transmissions. The trucks didn't change a whole lot over these years.

The 86 and older models had a much different front end with a very flat square style. Also, the fenderwells were a different shape. They were also available with a different (335) family of engines, the 351M and 400M.

The body work is a little different, but everything body-wise was very similar 80-96. A few of the older trucks might have had a 351M or 400, but I think most had the 300, 302, or 351W. The biggest difference is the addition of fuel injection. The 302 went EFI in '85, the 300 in '87, and 351W and 460 in '88. So all but one year of two motors are EFI in the 87-96 range.

yep, almost all same from 87-96...some changes were done in 92 to the front end of the truck...and in 94,MAF was introduced.

and yes, in 97 the round f-150's came out with new modular motors.

1980 was the first year that I know of unless there is something crazy I didn't know about.

Try 1965, with twin I beams.

Twin I-beams came out in 1965 and were used right up until 1997.

TTB - the four wheel drive version - came out in 1980.

I was speaking about the 4x4, didn't even think about 2bys. That is the way my mind works.

True IFS (or what most people think of as IFS) wasn't used until 97, TTB was used before that. Both systems are time tested with their individual strengths and weaknesses.

Thanks for the answers. With the newer trucks then, do they all have IFS except for the superdutys?

I know 1980-1996 were all very similar, but with only one more division, we could all be in a class of our own. I wish we had separate forums for each body style.

1980-1986
1987-1991
1992-1996

This way, each body style could go to their own forum. Mine is in the middle group (1989 w/ 5 speed, 300 I6). In my opinion, the front end changed just as much in 1992 as it did in 1987. My "high-hood" looks alot different than the 1992 with the shallow hood--or maybe it's because I'm such an avid 1980 to 1996 F150 fan that I pickup on the differences more than most people.
