i have been searcing for quite a while, both on here and the web and have found nothing but other people looking for the same thing.
I have a 96 gt mustang with 50100 miles on it. I wrecked it a few years ago, and since then its been sitting in my garage.
I recently found a little blue 2wd stepside xcab ranger 5 speed. Its a 94ish year. the guy only wants 1000 bucks for it, and it runs, but has quite a few miles on it. This wont be my only car, so i can afford to have it down for a while.
Where do i get info on this conversion?!?!
ps check out my thread on the ultimate hick trick.....!!!!
Look on page 2 and check out what Greg R did. If the link doesn't work, search the forum using the keyword 'unique.' Find the thread title "what makes your ranger stand unique" or something to that effect. That should lead you to what he did. I'm sure he'd be willing to help you out in swapping.
The 4.6 wont fit. It is way too big. I guess i shouldnt say it wont fit, but to make it fit, your talkin about cutting alot of sheetmetal out of your ranger. Basically you have to make your own firewall, I"m guessing you'll have to do something with the steering box since on the 5.0 the oil filter is in the way and i believe the 4.6 is much wider. Also I'm sure there will be much modification nessesary to the heater box also, since on the 5.0 you have to trim it, so on the 4.6 it will probably need to be mostly removed. Basically i'm saying that it CAN be done, it is just something that will take more work, money and effort than most people would consider worth it. If i had the money and the time, i'd do it, just to say i'd do it. But it isnt going to be an easy swap like the 5.0 would be. If you compare the 5.0 and the 4.6, the 4.6 is a physically larger engine, by like alot.
Greg R made it fit. Idk how, don't really care to know how, bc I'm into gas mileage more than raw power, but I think it's interesting how he did it. Check out the link.
yeah, i've never seen that before, like i said, it CAN be done, lol. I bet that took him a long time. I bet he gets some looks when he takes off from stop lights and leaves camaro's & stuff sitting in the dust.
Lol, yeah, just the 5.0 in my truck (F150) was alot of work. Its always fun to drive somthing around that most people dont have. It kinda puts a grin on your face. Take a look at my gallery to see what i'm talking about. I would love to drive that ranger, or do the mod. I just dont have the money, or the time, heck, i should be doing my physics as we speak
I have a speed shop, and customers come just to see what kind of crazy stuff i can come up with... Itll be fun! My Mustang has 3.73 gears, the t-45 5 speed, and the 4.6, and it got 32 mpg at 80 mpg on the interstate, so i think this litte truck will have atleast that?
I just hope i can keep some of its hauling/towing capabilities!
How much stuff can you throw in one? Are they rated like a 1/2 ton pipckup or what?
Thanks guys you made my winter!
Hey guys. Yeah, I spent some time doing the swap, but it's a hobbie and I treat it that way. I would sometimes go weeks without even touching it. And since I had zero real info to go by I spent more time measuring and doing research than anything else.
There's also a guy with a Mustang 4.6 in a '98 4x4. The key to an "easy" 4.6 swap is getting a '98-up Ranger, the rack-n-pinion steering makes it all possible. The electronics will also be able to work with the Mustang stuff. There's no mods needed to the frame, firewall, or suspension. With a sohc the exhaust and steering should be much easier.
Cost? Well, I pulled mine off for about $1500 and that includes the cost of an engine, trans, and electronics.
If you have the complete Mustang you'll have most of what you'll need. I believe your Mustang has the under-dash AC components, I've heard of guys putting them into Rangers so you could keep AC if you want.
I've seen '98-up 2WD 4 cyl Rangers (usually white fleet type trucks like mine) selling for under $2000. You could part out the stuff you don't need from the Mustang and get enough to buy a Ranger. I made almost $1200 parting the Mark VIII without really working at it.
Good luck with your project. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
I've seen engines as big as a 460 under the hood of a ranger, but thats REALLY pushin it. with enough desire, a good source of funding, and some supplies, anything can be done.
