I want to get the transmission serviced on my 2000 5.4 Lariat. Here is my question. Is this a sealed transmission like that on my wifes '03 Explorer? Or can the pan be pulled and a filter changed? I just don't want them to suck the fluid out and replace...and call that good. If there is a filter in there, then I want that changed. Should an additive be used to extend the life of the tranny or is just the recommended fluid sufficient?
Thanks
To be honest, yes you can change the fluid and filter by pulling the pan. The gasket should be reusable, but, honestly, you get a better job done by flushing the trans. At least the way we do it. I can get allmost all of the old fluid out and replaced with new. Just pulling the pan, You won't get but maybe half the fluid because you cant drain the converter anymore. As for the filter, by all rights, if the filter on a trans is plugged, you have bigger issues. A trans filter shouldnt plug unless someone is dumping crap down the dipstic tube.
I just drained my torque converter. there is a drain plug. Not sure about the E40D?? I have the other (has a 70 in it, not sure of actual number) I think this year truck has possiblilty of two transmissions. I have heard some bad things about the trans flush. Never did it so not sure. Some people say that the flush pushes fluid forward and reverse through the system. The reverse part is what the trans guys say is bad. It pushes the bad stuff which is supposed to collect on the magnets back up into the solenoids? I read here also that the flush has fixed their truck??
Kenstub, i have heard essentially the same thing. I think I will try to find a shop that will actually drop the pand and do the servicing. Even if they don't get all the fluids, it has to be better than pushing/sucking that old contaminated fluid through the screen and magnets.
on the R70W transmission you can take off the pan and change the filter and reinstall 5 quarts of oil. Make sure it is MErcon V and not striaght Mercon. Since yours was built before 2001 you have a small plug ont he torque converter, looks like a 1/8 inch pipe plug, but some type of metric thing. Pull it and you will get the other 8 quarts out of the rotating element and you can readd new oil thru the trans dip stick hole. I am also a firm believer in not "flushing" the oil and moving the crap around.---- On your explorer, it has no dipstick or fill hole. But you can remove the pan and change the filter and then the trick is to install new oil. you actually use the drain plug on the bottom and pump the oil up thru the drain. I use a weed sprayer and put the 5 quarts in it, pump it up , and poke up the drin hole. The drain actually has a stand tube that overflows when it is full.
