ugly situation

the 351w in my 88 f-250 went south on me, so i went to an auto auction and purchased a 351w out of a 92 f-350.do i have to use all my stuff off the old motor(emissions plumbing, electrical harness, sensors)or will all the 92 work.also will my distributor fit the 92.this is my first adventure with efi and things seem to be turning real ugly real quick. thanks

According to car-part.com, 88-93 engines should drop in with little sweat.

You can use the 88 truck gizmos.

What is so ugly? If it's pulling wiring harness from engine, just label the harness plug and label the corresponding engine point with matching letters or numbers or symbols, if not the part name.

I was "this close" to converting an old truck of mine to EFI from carb using a similar year harness...I labeled the whole harness in like 1 day of study time around work and school....

If nothing else, be glad that the harness plugs won't connect to anything but what matches to it, which will only be the corresponding sensor. If the assembly line has a blink of an eye to do that, so can you, in more time.

I'd use everything that you can from your truck. Basically, you'll just be using the longblock from the '92. The distributor should fit just fine.

when dad put a a new 351 in his 88 f250(efi)we got a motor out of a 82 f150 with a carberator, they are the same block with the same bolt holes as each other , as far as lableing thing it is a good idea but also remember every plug is diffrent from the last one , we ran into 0 problems as far as somthing not goin together as if it were the original motor

your whole electrical harness should be connected straight to the truck why would you want to cut the old wireing off and splice it back togeter ,just unplug it

thanks

thank you evryone for the input.whats ugly is the condition of the harness, intake, and basically everything in the engine room in the 88.i freely and publicly admit that the joker that sold it to me knew a sucker when he saw one.what goes around comes around, but i don't think i have enough years left to properly repay this joker!being old and lazy,i was just hoping i would'nt have to change everything over!thanks again for the input.

The harness from a '92 will not swap into an '88. The changed the harness design several times. 87 and 88 are the same, 89 is different from those, and a 92 is different than the 89 harness.

why, they didnt go to a remote tfi setup until 93. everything else should be the same. I was able to use my 88 302 harnes on a complete 95 5.8 motor. everything hooked up perfect. the only different on that 95 motor was the dizzy being setup for remote mounted tfi on the fender vs my 88 having it on the dizzy.

I don't know why Ford changed the harnesses, but they are not the same. I have an 87 harness, which is the same as the 88 harness that I also have, which is different than the 89 harness that I have for parts, which is different than the '92 harness in my dad's truck; remote TFI's began in '92. Using an older harness on a newer engine is not the problem; it's using a newer harness in an older truck that won't work (or vice versa).

hello
i just did an engine swap. donor was from an 88 150 to a 91 150. i had to use the wire harness form the 91. the 88 had one big plug on the fire wall and the 91 has four smaller plugs on the inner fender wall. also had to change one vacume line because i used all the accories from the 88 motor. i thought it was going to be alot worse than it turned out

good luck
pete...

that's the problem

i understand what you're saying. my 88 has 4 or 5 plugs and the 92 engine only has 1. sooooooo much nicer.the engine room would be much neater with only one plug. the previous owner butchered the harness and all you get done is tracing wires. oh well , the vacuum system is pretty well butchered too but i will kn
ow exactly what does what when i get this truck done. thanks for the input.
