Has anyone slipped a Dana 80 disk brake single tire rear axle into an old ford? Would it work? I'm sure it would be expensive. Would it be worth the trouble? The body/paint is almost done on my 79 SC F350 4x4. I am starting to plan out what I want to do with the drive train. It has a 460 with all the L&L goodies. Everything else is original. I am going to rebuild the 205, the c6(with upgrades), the 60 up front, and it has an appointment for a gearvendor overdrive. I don't do any real offroading, but I haul a 3700# camper, and want a larger boat (in the 5000# range). I was thinking that maybe a Dana 80 to replace the 60 that's in there now (and of course disk brakes would be too cool.....I know that you can buy disk kits for a 60, but I have always wondered how well a single piston GM caliper would stop +15000#)would be a good choice for all that weight. What do you guys think?
a dana 80 is way overkill for that, for a SRW a dana 70 is more than enough....you cant even max out the potnetial of a dana 70 with single rear wheels....find a dana 70 out of a 80-85 ford, it will bolt in, or you could also run a 10.25 sterling from a 85-97 f-250hd, or f-350
I think a Dana 80 from a 199?-2006 F350 SRW would be an excellent swap. Not only would you get the strength of a Dana 80 but you get some factory rear disc brakes with HD e-brakes already installed. Have you ever checked out the rear brakes on a 200? F350 Dana 80? They are huge! This is the key.. Sure you may have to cut and move some spring perches, but you will save in the long because you won't have to do a disc brake conversion.
when have they ever put a dana 80 in a ford srw truck?????
as far as i know they only came inthe back of the "f-superduty" and in the back of 99 and up cab and chassis f-350's. I think the old f-superduty axles are 10 lug as well
teh dodge dana 80 is not and stronger than a 14 olt or dana 70...i cant remember details.
"I guess that I should have mentioned that I would choose a Dana 80 out of a Dodge. They have kept the old bolt patern. Has anyone seen any for sale?"
It wouldnt hurt to look at some government surplus websites to see what sort of equipment you could find. I've seen Ford/Dodge aircraft tuggers up for auction. I'm not sure the axle type/ratio but I would assume its a beefy unit. I've also never bid on anything on one of these websites, but some of the equipment is cheap and useable.
I think the 80 is an overkill for what you're doing too.. but hey whatever floats your boat. Around here there are actually a few old Fords running around with the Dana 80 under them. Truck pullers that are turning serious hp put them in. But we're talking 600 hp+. Plus the strain pulling puts on a rear end is enormous. I have a 77 that I just started pulling. I run a 460 thats just shy of 500 hp. This year I ran a 60 and it didn't break, but i know it will, so I'm upgrading to a 70. The oner guy I know who did the 80 swap had to have the perches moved, and I think he had to have the shock mounts relocated as well. I think the dodge mounts are on the rear of the axle housing? Also, keep in mind that an 80 out of a dually will be narrower than a srw axle.
i also truck pull and i run a 70 rear it was a derict bolt in makein it very easy but why the 80 it weights mor it takes more to turn and unless your pulling a semi trailer loaded to the hills you dont need it a 60 would do ya just fine even you have the 60 up front so your truck already weights alot i know guys that have the dana 80 in there mod trucks and they havent broke them yet but i think some 80's are longer thou i could be wrong
the dodge dana 80's arent worth the weight over dana 70's....same size axle shafts....now the heavier 10 lug dana 80's that have the 37 spline shafts...thats another sotry
hey dont mean to rob the post but will any of the newer stuff with disc brakes retro fit to a 76 dana 70 . im looking to put discs on mine and am looking for a cheap way of doing it and thought maybe i could swap the newer stuff over to mine ?
