Thinking about replacing the tired 351 in my 87' Bronco with this one. Anyone ever had dealings with these people? I know i could probably get the same numbers cheaper by doing the build localy but there are two reasons that I dont want to do that; first is I hate the hassle, and the second is that I really dont want to support the local economy. I would just like to know if anyone has had dealings with them and if you have were they good or bad dealings?http://www.fordcobraengines.com/351w_400LBS.htm
that engine is for a car you have to call them and let them know what you plan on doing with the engine and what you are putting it in and they will build it up right for you. i was looking at that in the event a new oil pump didnt fix my pressure problems. Give them a call if you are serious. if not jasper makes a good engine
i seem to remember a very unhappy member here who used them. the engine blew up and he posted tear down picks. the worknaship was poor and they reused old parts. he said the valves were reground, reused springs and keepers. the engine was over priced i think it was close to 5k. i use these guys when i need one www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com
If you are using a truck motor, you will want low RPMs. And the stock parts are absolutely fine. The aftermarket parts will only give you improvements above 3kish.
You can find a good complete motor around for about $400. My cost of rebuiling has been about $1500 so far and that will make a strong torquey close-to-stock 351.
Do your homework and don't be fooled be flashy names.
I called these guys and they said that they built this motor specifically for trucks and it has low end power to spare. I have looked around their site and found a guy who put his email address up there, he has already put the motor in a bronco and I wrote him an email to see what he thought about the company as a whole and the motor he got from them, so far i havent gotten a response, but i just sent it so... I am not in that big of a hurry to get a new engine, which is why i am trying to find a good company to do bussiness with before I have to get a new engine. I am going to upgrade tires and suspension in the future and I know a stock engine isnt going to handle what I want to do in the future.
if you are going o upgrade the engine to run bigger tires wouldnt it make sense to upgrade your gears to a lower ratio(higher numbers) that way you could keep your engine that is in it now close or right on stock? that is the sensable way to approach this
gears always need to be addressed with larger tires regardless of the motor. even a new motor will have a short lived life if the drive train isnt up to par.
I would look into a ford crate motor if you can afford what that other site has available. also check out CHP as well and Jasper. most any of the build to suit places can get you lined up. get a dyno sheet that shows were that motor will make its power if peak torque doesnt hit till 4500-5000 rpms then it might not be that great of a setup in a heavy rig.
have fun and happy hunting
I am going to adress the gearing issue, as soon as it becomes an issue. I am not going to do any of this today or tomorrow, i just want to soak up the knowledge that you guys have been so nice as to pass out. I dont want to get to the point where I need to do something and then come on here and have a post about needing a new engine/drivetrain "by tomorrow". I appreciate all of you guys that are willing to share your knowledge with a newbie like myself, if I had used a site like this for my 79' f-150 it would probably still be alive today, but that is another story all together. kemical, can you give me websites of the companies that you are reccomending? I will look at alot more companies before I settle on my engine, and price is a factor but not as much as customer service and product reliability. I always say no matter how smart you are you arent going to get anymore than what you are willing to pay for.
i would take a look at www.coasthigh.com , thats chp's website. it would be a lot cheaper to just rebuild the engine you have now with a stroker crank and heads and cam and what not then to buy one that is pre built. are you going carb of efi?
My 393 is a CHP shortblock, streetfighter kit. It has forged pistons, I beam rods, cast stroker crank.
Hey Travis, ya notice the Eddy intake on the EFI version of the link posted, their rating of 385hp...
FEI (for everyone's info) - according to Edelbrock that intake is designed for stock 351s, I have that intake on my 393 and it's not working out as it doesn't flow nearly enough air.
If I were looking for a 100% complete build motor, I'd be looking at a place which can dyno the engine and deliver exactly the powerband I'm looking for. Crate engines are nice but they can be tricky because more often than not they are just not the 100% complete engine one is looking for. The only way to be totally satisified is if the engine is built to your own specifications. If you buy a crate motor, you may have to adapt it to your needs/desires.

Been there done that, dont have the time nor the space to work, I live on a ship and my personal space is about 4 square feet, including mattress. I will be totally satisfied with most anything that isnt stock, i figure if I can get twice the power and gasmileage why not do it?
