if you want you can email me your wiring colors and i can trace them out on the schematics
Since the solenoid on the starter only has one connection to the starter motor I would assume he needs the diagram from the fender mounted solenoid to the starter solenoid. I wish I could help but I am not real familiar with anything after '86
Front large terminal of the fender mounted solenoid goes to battery plus terminal.
This terminal also has several other power wires attached to it, the solenoid is a main power distribution point on our trucks.
Small side terminal has one wire that starts at the ignition switch, goes through the safety interlock (park or neutral on an automatic, clutch on the floor for a standard) and winds up at the small solenoid terminal.
Rear large terminal has one wire that goes to the small terminal on the starter mounted solenoid.
If you can get me your email address, I can send you the diagram you need. But, first check the neutral safty switch located at the bottom of the steering column. A rod from the key switch actuates the switch. The rod can get bent, or even worst the pot-metal actuator inside the column could be about to break. It's a real bear to fix with a tilt wheel, but the part only cost $10 from the "HELP" section at autoparts store. Are you sure it's the GP Relay(solenoid on fender well) that "just clicks"? Could the clicking be the GP Controller cycling the GPs? Baja
Use a test light and see if you are getting power from the fender mounted solenoid to the solenoid on the starter . Check it at the starter end if it is hot at the fender end when you activate it . If power is getting to the starter from the solenoid and the hot batt cable , you need a starter .
On an 87 the glow plug relay is mounted on the intake manifold, that was the first year for the new style glow plug system.
Truck in neutral, wheels chocked, parking brake on.
Key on.
Take a piece of wire and jump across the fender mounted solenoid to both big terminals.
If the truck cranks, the fender mounted solenoid is bad.
If it still just clicks either the batteries are bad or the starter is bad.
You have to pull the starter to get to the lower solenoid.
Dave,
I was so happy to see you say there are two solenoids. I had gone to NAPA today and they asked if I had fender or starter mounted solenoid. I knew I had one on the fender so I said "fender". Didn't fix the problem (just getting one click, batts good), so I crawled underneath and saw what looked like a solenoid right by the starter. Was confused, thanks for pointing out the two.
