has any one ever removed the smog equipment from their truck, I am moving to florida in the new year and they don't have smog laws any more ( three cheers for florida ).
I have an 1985 F250 with the 460 in it and would love to un-choke it and run a decent intake/carb and MSD ignition. It would also tidy the engine up a bit.
I was thinking about an edelbrock intake with their 600cfm carb hooker headers with maybe 36" glasspacks exiting in front of the rear wheels, what do you think?
mine removed itself.... rusted off behind the heads.... from there it was easy. I have a 351... assuming it's similar.... Plug the holes in the heads with bolts and pull the air pump. I also did the edelbrock w/ 600. No headers on mine, but if it breathes easier you might actually help your mpg..... that is once you get past the honeymoon stage of listening to them glass packs roar when you open barrels 3 &4....:-)
uh..how would you go about that on a 351w??? its all hooked up on mine and i heard it adds about 25 hp or somethin when u take it off..not trying to steal your thread...mines an 86 and its already got a holley 600 on it...
I removed ALL of the smog equipment on my 86 F-250 with a 460 and it helps a great deal. I put on an Edelbrock intake, model 1411 Edelbrock carb, (750cfm), and a little better cam. I know some people say that the smog equipment helps and all that, but it's been my experience that a properly tuned engine will run as clean as the power robbing smog crap laden engine tries to do. I've got some pics that I'm going to download pretty soon so it'll show you how clean an engine bay can be.
The 750 is a much better choice for the 460. The 600 would choke it down a bit, especially after freeing up the intake and exhaust. Love msd 6 series ignitions. Work great. Might think about a Mallory unilite distributor. Also, if I were to do this, I would consider an edelbrock cam to match my intake. An "RV" type cam with the other changes would really awaken that motor. My personal preference is flowmaster mufflers. I love the tone they produce. Glasspacks are just too loud for me. A 2.5 or three inch exhasut from the headers back will sound great.
Spot on SierraBen. I inherited my dad's '82 F250 4X4 351 and he had stripped off all the smog stuff, put headers, flow masters, etc. Being a fireman in the San Bernardino mountains he never had a problem getting it to pass smog. Here in CA they have the "smog only" certifications and it's my turn in the barrel, so I either have to get rid of the "heirloom" (only has 68K miles on it) and the sentimental attachment or dump a ton of capital into getting it legal. Anybody have any suggestions on where to find the parts or how to proceed?
If ya want to get rid of the smog, jsut shut the motor off. sorry, I couldnt resist. if you want to make a truck legal in cali, I'd advise just getting a parts motor, and start pulling the smog stuff off it and stick it on your motor. then sell the motor for parts.
I removed all my smog stuff because most of the stuff didn't work anyways, and alot of the vacuum lines leaked. It did clean the engine compartment up alot, and it actually looks like an engine now. I can't really say there was any additional power or anything, but it runs good, and my mpg has gone up. I don't know if thats because of taking the stuff off, or other changes i have made.
question: what distributor did you use? the stock one had the module and stator in it thats controlled by the pcm. Since you disconnected all that, what distributor will work without the eec??
I don't have any computer controlled stuff on mine. I dunno what distributer I have, but vacuum controlls the advance. A duraspark ignition is what I have, so if you have computerized stuff, that will have to be switched.
