[QUOTE=Cuda444]Fat, just to be clear, are we both speaking of the axle seal inside the pumpkin? QUOTE]
I did not touch any seals inside the pumpkin. You mean pull the cover? No. I did not pull the cover. There are two seals on the axle assy. The inner one slides on with your hands, the outer requires the custom tool made from pipe. What seal are you talking about?
I already did my ball joints, and when inserting the drivers side axle, I apparently wasn't careful enough and chewed up a seal (the inner axle seal) apparently located inside the pumpkin (I'm assuming where the pumpkin and axle meet). Soon after completion, I noticed diff. fluid coming out of the axle tube on the drivers side. I posted a thread a few days ago and it was confirmed as an inner axle seal -- cover has to come off, axles out, gears out, new seal in and reassmble. *sadness* Sometime this week I'm going to run out and get a hayne's manual and see what they have to say about the issue. I was just wondering if you've ever had the pleasure of tackling this task.
Still waiting for a call back from the dealer service dept. They had to get the work approved under an extended third party warranty that I had purchased when I flew to Dallas, TX to pick-up my SD.
My main concern...is the overall cost...because the warranty company will only pay a certain percent of labor (I think?) Fortunately the "silver" package that I purchased...does list the upper/lower ball joints, u-joints, 4x4 actuator, and 4x4 hubs.
Does anyone know if the upper/lower ball joints being replaced also include the alignment in the FORD Service Book? It's like charging me to install the 4x4 hubs...when the hubs have to be removed for the ball joints. Right??? Or is it not necessary to remove the 4x4 hubs when doing ball joints?
Fat Diesel ,I sure hope you were real gentle and careful in putting them axles back in or you'll be doing what cudda has to do.
The innner axle seals are futher in by the carrier, they get damaged when the tech pulls axles out ,within a few weeks the gear oil starts coming out the tube.
Cudda ,your going to have to make something up or buy the tool that is way to big length wise.
biz, just catch them on thatthats charging you labor twice for something that gets done once.
The alignment is seperate, they might throw it in though.

Forty, do you have a pic or description of what the tool looks like for that inner seal? Also, is the inner seal similar to the outter seal that is driven on with the tool already pictured? Would a hayne's manual go over the procedure for this?
Fat Diesel, I noticed mine was leaking when it was parked on a side hill (Drivers side was lower than the passenger side) and it was a slow drip, it ran all the way down to the knuckle, making it look like the lower ball joint was leaking fluid, but if you trace it back, it's coming out of the pumpkin.
Cudda ,I have factory shop manuals for this.Ford has a special tool,it puts both seals in at the same time with a spreader driver seal adapter on both ends then you spread the driver with a threaded bolt it pushes both seals in at the same time.
You know that you need to remove the carrier and all tierods and things in the way to do this job.then you might be able to use a seal driver with a short shaft on it .
You guys are making me regret not getting the 100K bumper to bumper. With over 200 hard off road miles a week, I guess I should have known I would have problems.
I think I will get the dynatrac combo kit when my front end has had it.
Forty, I can't remember, but when I do pull the axles, will that outter seal (the one that's driven on) be reusable? or will both need to be replaced ($$)? Also, is the carrier a real big deal? Any special tools?
Thanks for all the help

If you are talking about your '06 that you have listed in your signature...then you might be able to still get the extended warranty. Check with Polarbear or 1956MarkII. IMO...
I would have them on hand just in case.
Here's is a suggestion you can go to this website and buy a online subscription for your truck it has the shop manuals online . www.motorcraftservice.com or www.alldata.com.
There good sites.I use them along with my paper manuals.
They have pictures of the tools.

Rich -- I will ask. Heck for all they are doing...maybe they will throw the alignment in. But...I will not hold my breath. Here in ABQ, NM...these dealers are pretty bad. It is usually a "take it or leave" attitude.
OBTW: Got a call from the dealer and the third party warranty company is sending out an inspector. Just another day of waiting...
