so i blew a tire this weekend and i put the spare on, and while in progress i noticed it is a 15 inch. my truck has 245 x 75 x 16 and the spare was 235 x 75 x15
well my question is isnt this sucker really really bad on the rear end? why the hell would ford put that small of a spare on? is there anything i can do
Ford's reasoning is that the 245/75R16 tire diameter is slightly larger than the space between the frame rails, so it does not fit easily into the spare tire location. The 235 spare is only slightly smaller than the frame rail width and will work as a spare without messing up the rear end or ABS.
The only way it will do any damage is if your truck has posi and you drive with the spare on for thousands of miles. The only adverse effect is if the tire is on the front it will pull when you hit the brakes. Remember it's a "spare" it's there for when your stranded in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere. It least it's a fullsize and not a donut like the chevy s-10's all have.
Personally, I like the powdered donuts, occasionaly some lemon filled. Just make sure you get the right size tire back on there quick. You never know when you'll need a spare again.
I have the same situation on my 04 Edge 4x4. Seemed silly at first but again it is a spare and it would be hard to fit a larger wheel and tire under there in that space.
And about the S10...well in another life I owned a 93 S-10 and it had a full size spare with the same tires that were on the truck...just mounted on a steel wheel instead of the aluminum ones like the rest of the truck.
I thought the donut on the S-10 sounded weird. My bro had a '95 S-10 that I do believe had a full size spare. now that was a decked out truck. It was extended cab, had 4 MTX 15's in it. Iknow they're MTX, but it's four 15s for crying out loud. He had a Xenon body kit, 17" Cragar SS wheels, clear corners, everything. That was a sharp truck. It's too bad I couldn't have gotten that, bc now I'm doing stuff like that on my truck, lol. I helped him drop a 4.3l into it. He had some kind of wicked cam in there. It steadily lobed (loped?) at about 600 rpms. It was carbuerated btw.
I had a pretty serious issue with that little crappy spare. I use my truck off road pretty often so a donut just won't cut it, and I hate killing my bed space with a full size spare. Come to find out, you can fit a full size spare, at least I could fit a 31x10.50x15 in the stock spare location. It's not a perfect fit, it's a little wedged, but it is all the way up in there. I could not do it until I had my exhaust re-done, I had the guy relocate the tail pipe as far away from the spare as possible, he managed to move it over enough that I have a couple of inches space between the spare and the tail pipe.
well i was pissed because all my tires are going to need to be replaced and i dont have money yet. i was aiming at replacing them after my new grants are paid out in late july, so i figured that i have a full spare... why not drive on it for a month and a half... WRONG. i would be scared to drive my 200 mile one way trip with it on there at 80+ miles an hour
I had the same problem when I had my first flat except my were 265-75-15 and the spare was 235-75-15. It did look a little funny until the tire was changed.
Just for reference, the spare is only for getting you to a safe place. It's not intended for long term use or trips! So the spare on your truck is quite adequate.
While you have a point, I just feel safer knowing I have an exact replacement for what was there should I have a problem. It was worth it to me, but I can see where some people might not feel they need to go to the extra expense. I use my truck regularly off road (notice I said use not abuse.....I beleive in driving my truck home) as well as I tow a boat regularly(boat & trailer weigh about 2000lbs). With a full sized spare, if I have a problem, I can get it home with the spare on, and then fix what needs fixing once I get back to the house or at least solid pavement, no ill handling issues, no lopsided stance from a difrent tire size, besides I had a semi used BFG AT it was perfect for a spare to replace one of my BFG MT's if I have a problem. Along with this I always keep a plug kit and a can of fix-a-flat. I tend to get waaayyyyy off the beatin' path so to speak so it kind of pays for me to be a little more prepared than average.
I have no problem with people wanting to feel safe, and if you want to get a full size spare, great! I was just trying to say the spare on the truck will do what it is intended to. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone!
About the s-10's. My dad used to own a 2000 and it had a donut. I also had a freind that had a 2001 with a donut, and i know 3 other guys that all have 2002 s-10's and they have donuts. I'm assuming that in 94-95 they still gave you the fullsize and reciently cut it to save a few bucks. Up until 3-4 years ago mercedes gave you a matching spare, same tire and alloy rim that the rest of the car had. They still give you a fullsize but it's on a steel rim, i guess they got a little cheap there too.
BTW, for makes it so the spare tucks into the narrow frame so you dont see it hanging down like some of the other trucks.
