Starter turns but engine does not.

Starter turns but engine does not.
I have not visited the site in a bit and apologize if this has already been answered.
87 Ford F150 with 302 and automatic x-mission. Went to start the truck after driving it to work this morning and hear the starter spin but apparently is not engaging the flywheel to turn the engine. In my mind only two possiblle problems.
Starter itself is shot. (I hope)
Flywheel has broken teeth.
This truck has a history of starter getting hot and not wanting to turn at all until it has cooled off for 15-20 minutes.
I am planning on pulling the starter in the parking lot and head to parts house tomorrow afternoon.
Are there any other possibilities that I have missed..
