while i was removing the water pump on my 1987 f150 5.8v8,two of the bolt snapped on the lower left side as you look at it.one is broke off in the aluminium housing covering the timing chain, and the other is inside the block, these two are on the coolant orifice one on each side. any ideas to avoid a costly shop bill. ty
Can you get the water pump off and grab the remaining stud with vice grips?
If so, you may want to try heating the block area with a torch and trying to turn the stud with those, or grind two flat sides on the stud so the vice grips have a better grip.
It might be wise to drop the oil pan becouse there are 2 pilot buchings that the timimg cover sits on and you cant hardly get them off without breaking them. But removing the timimg cover is no consern just buy a new gasket.
make sure when you replace the bolts & put everything back together, use some anti-sieze on the bolts so it doesn't happen again!
I had to take half the front end apart to get to the ones on my 87 5.0L to be able to drill & use extrators.
i think im going to try a reverse drill bit on the one, agood friend swears by them.ty its kind of difficult to work outside right now, northern minnesota you know
I've had and seen so many bolts broken off in various items that I use anti-seize compound on everything. I mean every bolt, nut, screw, lugnut, etc. on my cars, trucks, boats, Harleys, mowers, tillers, you name it, it's got that silver stuff on the threads.
