So, I was backing up in my driveway last weekend, and a tree jumped in the way of my driver's side mirror , and creamed it. The glass is gone (buried in the snow until April or May), and the outer shell is in several pieces. The plate (behind the glass)with wiring and electronics appears to be intact. It's a 2002 dual arm power version (no heat or lights). I've done a few searches, and found a variety of posts - nothing specific. My questions:
1) Any readily available procudures for removing/replacing the assembly?
2) Are separate components available, or do I need to purchase the entire assembly?
3) Anybody know part nos. and suggestions for where to order FACTORY items from? (I want to stay away from aftermarket - read stories of vibrations, poor fit, etc)
They are a single piece. As far as replacing it, it's a snap. Part # is 5C3Z-17683EAA for the drivers side.
There are 2 bolts that hold on the door panel, one behing the "sail" panel and the other behind the red marker light on the bottom of the door. Behind the rubber plugs in the door you will find the nuts (3) that attach the mirrors. You need to take the door panel off to access the electrical connector for the power mirrors.
Forgive me if I forgot somethings. It has been a year or so since I swapped the "sport" style mirrors to the trailor tow mirrors.
I swapped out both sides in about a hour. It is really easy to replace the mirrors.
One quick tip. Apply some grease to the nuts of the mirrors fasteners to prevent the nuts falling out of the socket and down inside the door.
Follow Up post. Ordered the mirror from parts.com (thanks sportscar) - part No. 3C3Z-17683DAA (driver's side telescopic two-arm, power, no heat, no lights). $140 with shipping - expensive, but cheaper than I could find anywhere else...
boxcar1974 - your instructions were right on, except that mine had four 11mm nuts holding the mirror on , and like fortyfords said, removing the speaker makes the plug easier to access (takes a 5.5mm socket/wrench)
Does the mirror also fold (flip) foward too? I'm looking to change my sports mirror to TT mirrors and I want the ones that fold both ways. Have seen the 3C3Z-17683DAA (mirror you got) and 3C3Z-17682DAA (right side) on the web (Powerstrokeshop.com has them for $125 ea). Also wanted to ask what type connector does it have - round or rectangle?
Just getting back online - been on vaca for a week or so...
To answer, yes, the mirror flips forward as well. It has a rectangular connector on the mirror, but a pigtail is included in the package, that has a square and a round connector on it.
Hi guys,
Thanks for the info and pointers. I just ordered the mirrors from genuine-ford-parts.com. Ran me $257 + ~$25 for shipping. BTW, found this site indirectly via FTE seacrh so thanks FTE !!
