Can anyone tell me the difficulty and cost associated with swapping the gears in my rear end? I don't know the exact numbers I've got now, but I know they're low. I've got the "granny low" first, and can only get the truck to about 65 comfortably. I'd like to get a higher gear to allow me more speed and I'm hoping for better MPG. I don't really need the low gears because I don't pull anything. Right now I only get 5 mpg. There aren't many junk yards around here that have any 70's Ford trucks. Will gears from an 80's truck fit? Do you just need the parts out of the differential or is there more involved. I would like to do this myself, but I don't know how much is involved. I'f I can just pull gears out of the differential and put new ones in than I'll probably just do it myself. If its more involved I might have someone else do it. I don't want to screw anything up. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.
Brendan,
A removable front carrier is very easy to swap. It is not difficult to adjust, if you know what to adjust and how. You do not know how to adjust it, so get a pro to do it. You can get a front carrier at a scrap yard for $100. Check the tag bolted on the rear end and don't lose it. Find a 3.00, it'll help you out alot.

sounds like you probably have a set of 4.10 gears. If it were me I would drop down to some 3.55 but I don't think that I would go any lower than that. but that is just my opinion
