Engine swap

Do-able?

79 F100 with a sick 302, mated to a C4 trans. Swap to 351/400 with C6.

Or should I just find another 302? A rebuild is a bit too rich for my blood right now.

Find yourself a 351w. It's a straight swap, all you need is the flexplate from the Windsor and a 351W crossover pipe, everything else is the same.

If you go with a 351M/400, you have to change the tranny for sure and there may be other things that need changed for the swap.

The 351W will give you better mileage than the 351M too.

Plus the 351W is about 100 lbs lighter and the block is physically smaller. The 351W is cheaper to modify too. The hardest part about the swap is finding the proper oilpan if you are putting it in a 2wd truck. Believe me you'll love it.

Okay. 351W it is. Added flexplate to the swap list. What's a crossover? Is that exhaust?

So everything else will bolt up? Carb, exhaust manifolds, alternators, intake, etc?

Yeah.....the truck is a 2wd. Have any idea where I can find a proper oil pan? Aftermarket?

The crossover is the Y-pipe. The manifolds, carb, accessories, etc. are all interchangable. As for the oil pan, you can get one aftermarket or used from a salvage yard, you can also get your flex plate there too if there's not one on the motor. Get the same style oil pan as what's on the 302, or if you don't mind spilling oil on the cross member, you can use one of the double hump type that came in the bigger cars with 351W (easier to find).

I used a reman pan that was intended for early 70's passenger car. This is the same style front-sump pan that is on your 302. You might consider getting custom dual exhaust on your truck, I don't think there's any factory 351 y-pipe that clears the crossmember between the cab mounts. I reused the 302 alternator, PS pump, and wiring harness. The 302 alternator brackets work, but it will use a different bolt hole in the bracket that goes on the head. I used the PS brackets that were on the 351 already (came from a van). Use the original 302 motor mounts on the 351.

I think you can get away with using the C4 behind the 351, otherwise get a later model C6 which will drop right in.

If you run into any problems during the swap, just ask. I did the same swap last summer. Best thing I've ever done to the truck

Good, good. Gathering up all the information I need.

But where the heck would I find a 351W? Is it okay to use 1980 and up F-series 351W motors, strip it down to bare block, add the 79 stuff on it? I know the 80's and up have a lot more emissions crap on it, and I don't want to deal with plugging smog equipments, I have annual e-checks here.

You could use a later model engine but you would need to plug the dipstick hole in the block (if so equipped) and use the original timing cover with dipstick in it for the front sump oil pan. I think if you just retain the same level of emissions your truck currently has you should be ok.

My truck is emission exempt where I live so I have nothing on it. However, I my truck never had any emissions equipment on it whatsoever from the factory. No EGR, no cats, no charcoal can, no smog pump.

Truck is 79 F150 Custom 2wd originally 302 4 speed now 351W 4bbl C6.
