Cruise Control Fix
Cruise Control Fix
The cruise control on my 93 F-150 started acting up a few weeks ago (slow to disengage when lightly applying the brakes) and then one day it wouldn’t turn on at all. I trouble shot the system, thanks to the many post on this forum, and found the brake pressure switch leaking into the electrical connector. Ford had the part for $20 which included a fuse able link. (I didn’t know the early years were susceptible to catching on fire like the recall on the new ones but FORD isn’t taking chances) It took less than ½ hour to change and now everything works as advertised. Hope this helps someone out there scratching their head.
I forgot how many years they went back but my 95 was included in the last recall they just did. I had them fix mine right after I found out about it which was on here
btw. I never received anything from ford in the mail or anything but I called my dealer and told him what I had and he knew everything about it, this was in oct. They installed the new switch but there is a fuseable link they are installing as well but they told me that in the middle of nov. they would have the fuseable links and that I'd have to bring it back, they haven't called so I'm going to have to call them. My cruise had stopped working over last summer and I did have a leaking switch so from reading on here I unplugged it so I could keep my truck from burning to the ground.
they sent me a letter for my '95, and I just unhooked the thing myself (to save time and gas) and am waiting until I can get the fuseable link. They sent me a postcard a couple weeks ago saying something about how
...ford doesn't have enough parts to meet demand and keep up with the recall...They will have the parts ready by february '06...
Just thought I'd let ya kno... Have a good day!

I replaced mine on my 95 F-150. Worked great for a while. Now I'm back to it not working again. You say it's a fuseable link. OK here's the stupid question. Is there actually a fuse that may have blown? Is that why it might not being working now?
I think the fuseable link goes in where the new harness and switch goes on the master cylinder. It's in there to stop the power should a problem arise again, another thing they could've done is wired it up to turn off when the switch is off so it would only have power going to it when the switch is on. What they've done is cured the problem with a bandaid.
article from Cleveland Plain Dealer:
Ford postpones repair of flaming cruise control
Friday, December 02, 2005
Ford Motor Co. has told owners of 3.8 million vehicles that there will be another delay in providing a new part designed to prevent a cruise-control fire that could occur even when the key is not in the ignition.
Ford announced the recall in September and said parts would be available in mid-October, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records. In November, Ford predicted that parts would be available in December, the safety agency said.
Thursday, Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley confirmed that owners are now being told the parts should be available in February. The delay was caused by the need to design, test and manufacture a new part.

its by the brake fluid resivoir... should be on drivers side, close to cab. 3 or 4 wires leading to it. Simply squeeze the plactic thing and pull... comes right off. Don't forget to cover it with electric tape.

(somebody please correct me if I'm wrong but) I belive there just a switch in there. Whenever it senses a problem, that switch should go out. This prevents the electric current from running through and making things get too hot, and keeps your truck from burning. : ) I'm guessing the thing you'll have to do is replace that switch.

93s are in a different place
The newer Brake Pressure Switch is mounted vertical on the master cylinder. My 93s was on the frame rail between the engine and master cylinder, mounted horizontal. I think the horizontal mount kept the fluid from building up when the switch started leaking. I am not sure how the fuse-able link works (it is just a short wire between the old connector and the new switch)
